I was wondering if anyone might know roughly how much weight loss would occur when faceting the girdle of an OEC? I am looking at a 3.09ct and I certainly would not want it dropping under the 3ct mark.

You need to call Singlestone or Brian Gavin. I would absolutely have a girdle redone, because almost all of the old stones have extremely thin girdles.

HI Bright ice,
There's a number of options with an older stone.
If there's small abrasions on and around the girdle a clean up might be in order.
This might include faceting the girdle, while not "improving" the overall girdle thickness.
If that's possible, I love the idea- and have done it many times. You can end up with a slight brighter diamond IMO
In such cases weight loss is generally minimal- IOW doubtful you'd risk going below 3cts.

if you want a total re-do of the stone- which might include having a more uniform girdle around the entire stone you could be looking at both larger weight loss, as well as altering the personality of the stone itself.

Of course it's going to be necessary for a cutter to look at it to give you options.

Thanks Rockdiamond for your input.

It really depends. I sent mine in for a repolish and a girdle facet by BGD. It was 1.26 before and 1.25 after. To be safe since I had a chip and several naturals Brian said I might loose as much as 10 points if the chips turned out to be a difficult one to deal with. BUT...

What Brian told me, after the recut, when I asked him about how little weight loss I had is that diamond cutters are EXTREMELY good at saving carat weight, it's part of their training, so when it comes to recuts like this they are VERY good accomplishing goals will saving as much weight as they can.

Give them a call and talk to them.

ETA: My diamond is MUCH brighter after the recut. Totally worth it.
