Hi all - First post. I''ve been lurking for about a month, and have learned a lot.

I''m going to buy a ring imminently. I''d have used GOG in Long Island, near where I usually live, but I''m on a long business trip, and just can''t because of an upcoming vacation on which, ahem, the ring needs to go into action. So I ended up with my girlfriend at Mervis in Virginia - was honestly impressed with the service and the beauty of the stone (and I''ve looked at a lot), but feel from checking the internet that they are about 30% over market. I''d appreciate thoughts. Let me know also if there''s some further information that would be helpful.

$15, 728 (I think this should be no more than 12,500 or 13,000, but maybe even less).

GOG could still help you as they can work with you from their online inventory and or telephone also. As to the diamond you have mentioned, you would need to check carefully it is eyeclean to your standards, but unfortunately cushions need to be seen, you can't tell how they will look and perform by numbers. But if you like this one and it is what you were hoping for then that is the main thing! Generally brick and mortar jewellers will carry a price premium compared to online vendors, it is up to you how much you think the diamond is worth regarding whether it is a price you want to pay.

Thanks! I''ve noticed from reading discussions that I was unlikely to get much of a read on the quality of the diamond itself from the forum because of the cushion issue. We''re satisfied with it, and it''s eye clean to me (I''ll look even closer if I get to a price I feel is fair). But the price seems a bit off to me.

You are most welcome! I don''t know what to advise really, that appears to be the thing with b&m stores....Plus I am not that well up on pricing. I wonder, you could maybe ask them what their best price is and see if they will offer a reduction...

Just for the sake of comparison I searched for cushions of a similar size/clarity etc. The two I found that most closely matched the one you've described are at Whiteflash for $13,175 and $13,433. GoG didn't have any similar sized/clarity cushions to compare, but they did have this one that comes in less than the B&M stone at $14,443.

Like Lorelei has said, B&M stores do carry a higher price tag but at least this will give you an idea of what an online retailer would offer them for.

Good luck!

All - just in case anyone was interested, I negotiated 1300 off the price of the stone, and also bought a precision set setting (platinum), and was able to get them to ship without sales tax outside the state. I feel like I was still a little bit above market, but worth it given B&M and the time they took with me.

Incidentally, I looked very closely at the inclusions through the loup. Totally invisible without it, but they''re interesting to look at.

I''m glad it worked out for you!

Thanks. Now to figure out how to hand it over.
