I tried on some new eye makeup for a friend''s wedding and it gave me hives. I don''t wear a lot of makeup and the worst reaction I''ve ever had was some redness or minor rash. This was different, I was super puffy and itchy and miserable.

I had to take loratidine, zyrtec, and benedryl to make it go down (not all at the same time.) Washed with Cetaphil, Neutrogena daily scrub, and Fresh''s soy cleanser. Plus I put on frozen eyemasks and cucumbers. The cucumbers really worked.

Although the swelling has gone down, I now have lots of dryness and wrinkling where there were hives. What can I do to make that go away?

The irony is that this stuff was supposed to be rejuvenating for the eyes.

*sigh* I look much older with more significant bags now.

It''s called HydrAction, and I''m trying to figure out what I might be allergic to in it so I can avoid that ingredient; I never want this to happen again.

I had a huge reaction to a foundation by covergirl once. What I did to soothe my skin was to take ( I know its gross ) a ripe avocado, smash it with a little of aloe vera gel and leave it on my face for 15 mins. cover your eyes with the stuff and lay flat for 15 mins, it will soothe you and your skin will thank you for it :)

Give your eyes a rest. I know you think washing, soothing and moisturizing will help...but you're over working the tender skin around the eyes. The skin around the eyes is actually the thinnest on the entire body and needs to be treated accordingly which is why there is special eye creams and what not.

I would say that if your in discomfort, soothe with a cool wash cloth resting over the eye area...but avoid overstimulating by scrubbing and experimenting from here on out. Your eyes are healing from the reaction, give them a little time...you'll be good as new soon!!

There is also a condition called blepharitis that affects the eyelids. It is not a contact dermatitis but rather a redness, peeling, puffiness, and tearing. If you suspect you have this condition (which is an infection) as opposed to a regular allergy, contact your eye doctor ASAP.

If you have ended up with allergic conjunctivitis (which affects the eyeball more so than the surrounding tissue) you need to see a doctor as well.

If it really is just allergic contact dermatitis, you probably already removed the offending product. You can also use lemon juice (CAREFULLY) on a q-tip to alleviate some of the symptoms. If you still have any hives or blistering, you can use cold compresses for relief. You may want to continue taking an antihistamine because sometimes the reaction will resurface.

I have a story to share on swelling eyelids and the likes... In my youth, i was a lifeguard and on the first day we opened the outdoor pool, the sun was hot and really strong and i forgot my sunglasses at home. All day I lifted my chin and somewhat closed my eyes half way to avoid the full sun in my eyes. I paid for that mistake big time as i got myself a severe case of sunburn on my eyelids!!! I couldn''t open my eyes in the morning and all I could do what to put cold compress on them until the swelling went down. 3 days later, ALL OF MY EYELASHES fell out. I really looked like a freak lol. My doctor told me to do this avocado paste and put it on my eyelids to soothe and replenish the good oils I lost with this rash... It worked like a charm...

Wow. I am glad that didn''t happen to me, thanks for helping me put stuff in perspective. I have mostly been leaving it alone for the past day and a half and it seems to be getting better. But if this ever happens again, I will definitely mash an avocado.

I looked up the blephitis but I''m not sure that''s it. I think this is a one time thing.

Thanks for the feedback, gals!

I know how much this sucks. My last eye make up adventure involved nutrogenia cover up (you would think that is a safe brand).

The only way to get rid of the dryness is not not wear makeup for a few days
You can use a gentile unscented moisturizer to help speed things a long. White petroleum before bed should work ok.
Do not use any steroid cream, I know it is tempting, but the skin in that area is just too thin
Keep your hands off if possible - the more you touch it, the worse it is going to get

In the future know your safe brands and not so safe brands. I am sure my safe brands are different than yours.
