There is a stone at Diamond.com that I am interested in. It is a princess shape stone. 2 carat H color SI1 stone. Everything looks great to me with the GIA report, but I asked the salesman if it was eye clean. He called the gemoligist and asked. He came back with" there is a small black inclusion on the table. A trained eye can see it but not untrained eyes." I don't understand, if it is an eyeclean stone shouldn'that be universal (trained or not). My question is since it is a SI1 not a SI2 shouldn't it be okay? Are all GIA SI1 cert. stones eye clean? Wouldn't they be SI2's or lower if not?

Not all SI''s are created equal. SI1''s can be eye clean and some may not be. Same with SI2''s. Have to take each stone on it''s own. Can''t generalize here.

ace,
Clarity grades are not based on the visibility of inclusions to the naked eye; they are graded using 10x magnification. The fact that some SI1''s or SI2''s are eyeclean is just a rule of thumb but the grading is not meant to indicate this.

this is exactly the reason a vendor should have a standard definition of ''eye clean'' in place.
here is a link about definitions and eye-clean.

If they seem like honest salespeople and if you can return it if you are not happy - go for it.
That''s just my .02

As said before, not all Si''s are created equal. Whether you see an Si1 or Si2 inclusion depends on its size, type and location of the inclusion.

As for the stone you are intereted in, my guess is that you would be able to see the inclusion b/c he told you it is located on the table. generally I noticed, if the inclusion is closer up to the table it is more visible and if it is more lower down or hid on the sides by the prongs it is less visible. So I say pass, unless you are ok with seeing it.
