"Exposed" Culet - What type of setting?

Hi Psers! I was being a bad girl and oogling at some more settings and noticed something unique with these vintage rings. Can someone help me understand what part of the setting this is called to properly reference it going forth? Would you call it a wide donut but it is open and exposes the culet of the diamond?

I am enjoying the look and was curious if this is secure for the diamond? Anyone have a recreated setting like this? Any issues with designing a ring in this fashion?

Thanks in advance!

PB, I'm not really aware of any specific name for this type of setting. I guess I'd say a wide basket setting? Yes, the cutlet is exposed. I have a SImon G vintage halo with this type of setting. I like it because it's very easy to clean the diamond. I feel it's a secure setting, the prongs hold the stone in place. The only disadvantage I can think of is a wedding band doesn't sit flush if that's your preference.

Yep, I'm with you junebug. I call it easy to clean setting! This is a photo of mine. It's not quite as open but I love that I can clean the pavilion well.

Thank's for sharing and educating me that I should be using the term basket. Do you happen to have a picture of your vintage halo? I found your thread, showing off that beauty! Whew it packs a punch! But didn't see one of the bottom of the ring, which makes sense as no one really looks there... except me now. Glad to hear it is a secure setting and bonus that a band wouldn't sit flush. I used to enjoy the look where the bands sit side by side but am enjoying that gap look. Hope you have a great day!

Hubba hubba! I love your beautiful ring but didn't know the back side was just as desirable. Thank you for sharing. By the way, I love your non-matchy wedding band that goes with it!!

Aww thank you PierreBear. Mine isn't as open. I love the settings you posted! They sure don't make 'em like they used to! Although VC has some beautiful settings that have very open under basket design. To answer your question, the stones are seated securely in these settings.
