I was looking into buying a patio set (used or new) when I saw a listing for Hampton Bay on Craigslist. I googled it just because I wanted to know more about the brand. They are sold by Home Depot and the tempered glass tables have been known to spontaneously explode. Martha Stewart Patio furniture is also made by the same company and does the same thing.

Thought I''d put this out there as a head''s up because the thought of my daughter being near an exploding glass table made me ill.

It was. Actually, it said "all over asia" in the article.

I miss the good ole days when everything was made in Taiwan.

I dunno about ''exploding'', but glass is a material that expands and contracts, and in climates where the weather covers a broad range, particularly in the span of a day, it is quite possible that the glass with become compromised.

Growing up, I saw at least two glass patio tables suffer this fate (in Baltimore in the summer). However, it was a very curious and artistic looking event, nothing like an explosion. More so, you hear the slow crackles of the glass, and the glass bascially formed a shattered glass cone from the table top to the ground. It was beautiful, the edges where not sharp, and the glass was very centralized. Now, that is my perspective from being a child... I''m sure my parents were far less than thrilled. They were pretty baffled, and clean up was a nightmare. My neighbors had this happen too, and we wondered if someone wasn''t shattering tables in the neighborhood. (I doubt it, since they shattered so perfectly....)

Maybe that is not what you are describing, but just wanted to add my experience... nothing that would injure a child, thank goodness!

When I was a kid I lifted a (small) glass-topped patio table to move it (I was doing a school project in a classmate''s backyard) and the glass fell off and broke a bone in my foot. Those things are evil!

Well gee, this makes me just a tad hesitant to go out to the patio with my cup of coffee and sit at my glass top Hampton Bay table.

We''ve had it 4 years. No trouble with anything.... Do you think if it hasn''t sploded by now, it''s not going to?

I have nothing relevant to add, just that this made me laugh and create a possible snort/ little coffee outta the ol'' nose event. My co-workers think I''m looney. Thanks for making my morning Ellen

I''ve been doing searches, and it "seems" most shattered within a year or two. However, one glass expert said it''s not a matter of IF, but WHEN. So I have already decided I''m getting it replaced, and I''m going to do my darndest to get Home Depot to replace it. They are well aware of this problem. THEY should pay for the new glass.

TB, glad I gave you a chuckle. Sorry about the nose thing.

Hey Ellen... aren''t you the one with the squirrel peeing on your doormat issue? Maybe you could just leave some peanuts on the glass table. Set up a webcam or video camera... and wait!

Humanitarian note: The squirrel would not be harmed but I don''t think it would ever come back.

OMG Ellen, NOOOOOOOOO! I like you too much to have you sit near a ticking time bomb. Run away, run away! Now I am sick with worry that your table will self destruct and you''ll have to much ice to deal with...and not the good PS kind!

I think you should be fine. But yeah, I''m thinking glass tables are not what I want for a patio set.

And no, I bet it would NOT come back!

T, lol!! I was thinking I'd be ok too, but I just don't want to chance it. If anything happened to any of my family or friends, I'd never forgive myself. It's just not worth it.

When picking this set out, I actually wanted a different table/set, that wasn't glass top, but the chairs on this one won me over. They are SO comfy, and they rock, though they're not an actual rocking chair. And we've had so many compliments on them, I know it was the right decision. Who knew I was getting such a bonus with the "entertaining" table!?

I just got a price quote, rough estimate. For a 39x69", brown tint with hole for umbrella, 169.72 + tax. Less painfull than I thought it would be....

p.s. THANK YOU, for posting this!

Those types of tables are avoided here in Oklahoma for entirely different reasons. Can you imagine the wind coming up and playing frisbee with your glass table top?

Ok, I went and got the info I had on the table and chairs. Under the warranty, it states that "All furniture manufactured by BGI, Inc (not JRA), is warranted, blah, blah, blah. So, I look up this place, and where it's sold. It lists Home Depot, but not under the name Hampton Bay. The name of my set is Lasserre, doesn't list that either. If you search Lasserre, it brings up Hampton Bay. So, I'm confused on who actually made my set. Guess I'll call this BGI and see what they say.

Yeah, I think JRA is the make of the exploding sets. Hope this doesn''t get too crazy for you Ellen.

Called BGI, they made my set. *whew* Both outfits sell to HD, and both get slapped with the HB name. So all is well.

I had a tempered glass palette once, for painting. I used it once and cleaned it off. I went to set it down (not drop it, not set it down hard, not anything like that at all!) and it literally exploded! It was not a slow process, there was no warning, it just shattered. It left a weird smell in the air.

I was shaken, but unhurt. The palette was in a bag, so it was contained.

I have never bought another one.

Tgal, I actually found much of this research a few years ago too.

We bought our house in Dec 2004, and by the following summer, we were in the market for a patio set. While Martha Stewart herself makes me break out spontaneously in hives

, I ended up with one of her branded patio sets with a tempered glass table and the glass lazy susan on it. It wasn''t until I had it for a few weeks that I stumbled across the info about the glass tops.

We had our set for 3 years without incident. We left our set on the porch year-round mainly because I didn''t have a place large enough to store it. As you can see from the attached picture, it was buried in snow at points - LOL! It''s fair to say the table endured temp swings from -10 during winter to up to 95 during the summers.

While I loved the set, it was really too big for our existing deck, so I gave it to a friend and replaced it with all-weather wicker furniture.

I was okay with having it even after I learned of the problems some folks had, but if I had children, I don''t know that I''ve have been as comfortable keeping it.

I had a glass table that was around 20 years old and I never had any problems with it, it did finally break but that was because the neighbor girl was horsing around and ended up dropping it
