open being on that breaks the surface of the diamond of course.

What are the risks?
How common are diamonds with them?
How common is them causing problems with the diamond?
Is covering it with a prong a good idea? enough protection to make them worth buying?
If a diamond is otherwise great is it worth it?
Would you buy one for yourself/loved one to wear?

Questions on them have come up many times recently and I think we need a refresher course :}

Thank you in advance!! :}

Assuming that you are not merely referring to an indented natural located on the girdle edge or pavilion side of the stone which is merely part of the original skin of the diamond, we reject for external inclusions such as nicks, chips, open cavities, feathers which break the edge, etc. because of the potential durability risk that they place upon the stone. Why mess with them when so many other beautiful diamonds are generally available?

Placing a prong over a feather or chip along the edge of the stone? Doesn't that just kind of seem like asking for trouble? All that force crimping down on a crack which breaks the edge of the stone? Nah, let's not go there.

thank you niceice :}

What about tiny feathers at the edge of a stone as say in a VVS or VS grade? Is there a point at which the size of the inclusion is so small it shoudn't matter?

Depends, I have seen some stones split right along the feathers durring setting. If you can stay away from them, just this last weekend at a gem show a man asked me some advice on a stone he was about to buy..it had feathers in it, I told him we should talk to one of the dealers I have been working with for years...found him a ture VS stones for the same price, no feathers. If you can stay away from them.

Does it not also depend on the orientation of the feather and the crystal orientation?

Does anyone have pictures of what indented natural and chips look like? Are the chips supposed to be clean or with the ragged lines? Thanks
