So I'm about to buy a diamond, and I am between two. I am leaning towards an F SI1 Strong Blue Flou because we like the "blue" that can show up with these stones and are excited about it and not worried about the "Oily/Hazy" rare cases (Its an online purchase and can be returned worst case scenario).

Is there anything that I should be worried about on paper about this diamond? It all looks good to me, but I'm no expert:

GIA ->
.60 Round
Color: F
Clarity: SI1
Flour: Strong Blue
Measurement: 5.35 x 5.39 x 3.36 mm
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Cut Grade: Excellent

Here is what I want input on, the percentages: everything ok?

Sorry forgot the image!

Sorry for the triple post, can a MOD combine them? It was too late to edit

Here is the rest of the info I forgot..

Depth %: 62.6%
Table %: 56%
Symmetry: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Girdle: Medium to slightly thick, faceted
Culet: None
Fluorescence: Strong
Measurements: 5.35 x 5.39 x 3.36 mm

Looks fine on paper.

Welcome!

The diamond looks good, no worries!

Looks gorgeous - loving the strong blue fluorescence!

F SI1 sounds like a lovely combination - and the cut seems to be great. :)

Thanks for the input guys, I was pretty sure it was ok but my knowledge on diamonds is pretty much -1 :) From what I read it looked ok, but wanted your opinions.

Gonna order it, only thing holding me back was the oily/hazy talk of the strong blue florescence, but after some research and reading that GIA 1997 report all over this site I''m pretty confident it will be ok and worst case I can return it.

I feel good about it because its strong blue and not very strong blue, so if everything is good on paper it''s time to order.

P.S whats the best way to look for that ''oily/hazy'' look of a diamond?

The best thing is to check with the vendor if the diamond displays any negative effects from the SB fluorescence, but this is extremely rare. Or an appraiser can take a look during the return period to put your mind at rest, as it can be best for an expert to advise you so you know how to check a diamond properly for this, as diamonds can look very different according to the light conditions anyway. I wouldn't worry too much, to put this into perspective, a vendor here has sold thousands of diamonds over the years, out of all the ones with strong or very strong blue fluorescence, he says only a handful showed any negative effects.

Ok thanks!

Any1 recommend a good honest appraiser in the Greater Miami Area? (South Florida) ;P

I can definitely recommend Rich Sherwood who posts here, he is a great guy and an excellent appraiser, I hope he is near enough for you! If not, use this tool or Rich may be able to recommend another appraiser nearer.

Direct sunlight. What are the clarity-making inclusions?

Kromix, I have seen one that was oily/milky. I saw it under jeweler spot lights and next to the door in daylight. Was VERY easy to see. The diamond looked very cloudy in both places ... very little sparkle. You will know right off. Congrats on the purchase!

That was more likely lack of cut quality also if it didn't sparkle in daylight or in other lighting.

Well Sarasota is far for me, I''m in south florida... Don''t really want to send it anywhere not too comfortable with that plus I want to set it and give it to her :P If any1 knows a good person in South florida (which good people down here are hard to come by) let me know!...

JulieN: The only Inclusion it has is ''crystal'' according to the seller and GIA report.... If that is what your asking...

That should be absolutely fine - no worries.

So I just got the diamond in at work, it looks fabulous, I like it alot as you guys said nothing to worry about, my only question is I do want to make sure the flour doesn''t have a negative effect of oily/hazy and I don''t see anything like that any other ''tests'' to do ?

I am so glad you like it! As to the fluorescence being a negative, did you check with the vendor? I am very sure it isn''t a problem as it is rare that this happens - you can check it out in sunlight if you know what to look for, but don''t over think it - I would bet there isn''t a problem. Did you find an appraiser nearer to you on the list I posted?

Unfortunately not, the closest one to me is "about 63 miles" as the appraiser finding tool looks up via my ZipCode.

Still in search for one in my area .....

also as a side question, about how much does an appraiser charge to look @ a diamond and tell you what he thinks?

Thats a shame, maybe Rich could recommend someone closeby. As to the fees, it depends I think on the depth of the appraisal required, but around $90 and up would be a rough figure.

looks good

Thanks for all your help Lorelei!

I took it into the gemologist I was going to purchase a diamond for, and still purchased a setting and had her put it on it for me. She was trying to sell me a diamond and I told her I had 30 days to return it and after she inspected it with a bunch of tools she told me it was a very very nice diamond and very very nicely cut and the one crystal was at the bottom of the diamond and it looked perfect. She said that the only thing she didn''t like was the Strong Blue florescence and gave me the usual ''trade'' answer and said she does not see any oiliness or haziness in the diamond at all but that she doesn''t like the strong blue.

She said she could have got it cheaper, then I told her the price and she said WOW :P

Anwyays,

I''m alot more comfortable now with the purchase after the person trying to win my purchase says she likes it so much (Also her husband looked at it and was impressed, he works there as well and is a gemologist).

All in all, it is great and I''m super happy w/ the purchase. Will post pics soon!

I am really glad you are happy and you are welcome! It can be best to get an appraisal from a person who doesn''t sell diamonds to get an unbiased opinion, but it sounds like you did ok and that she was fair about it.

I look forward to the pics!
