This is a continuation from post https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/point-in-right-direction.49126/ for a better descriptive header.

Alright! Excel put up links to two stones I asked about. One of AGS0s was tied up but here is the other one.

http://www.exceldiamonds.com/diamond/29175.html there is a link to the ideal image scope next to the stone.

Also here is a GLI stone from excel that I requested before Berry recommend me the AGS0s. http://www.exceldiamonds.com/diamond/26683.html

Please give your expert opinions. I am not able to open the link to the ideal scope here at work for some reason, so I am clueless about the stones right now. Thanks

The E is gorgeous. Anything about eye-clean?

You might try pushing Ctrl, because the IS sometimes gets popup blocked.

Ah, yes, it says 100% eye-clean.

Ask about upgrades? The FAQ says that only Superbcert branded stones are upgradable.

JulieN I guess you dont think much of the G VVS1 since you did not comment on it. I am still interested in it mostly because of the price and clarity.....I just love looking into a stone and seeing ICE

But I like fireworks too! Thanks!

What is that white dot in the middle of the AGS is that the culet?

Also the girdle on the AGS is Thin to Slightly thick is this so big of a range? Will the spread by alright? Lastly does the black dots mean fire and scintillation? It does not seem like that many black dots, so does that mean less fire?

Should I continue to look or is Berry just good at picking them

The white dot is leakage. It's not as bad as it sounds and don't worry about it; many AGS princesses have it.

The spread is right about where it should be.

The black is contrast, or head obstruction. http://www.ideal-scope.com/newsletters_issue004.asp

Thin to slightly thick is the range for 0 grade on proprtions. http://diamonds.pricescope.com/agsideal.asp So it ranges from 2.2%-4.99% (of the short width.) The way AGS reports girdle on smaller diamonds can be tricky. The girdle for a stone with a width of 4.34 and defined as thin to sightly thick can range from .095 mm to .22mm. In GIA terms, this would very thin to slightly thick. You would need a Sarin to determine how much of the girdle is under .12 mm, which is "very thin" to GIA. If it just nicked being AGS thin (like 2.7-2.9) that would be better. What are the percentages shown on the AGS report? Like this stone says medium to thick http://www.exceldiamonds.com/diamond/25878.html but thick isn't allowed for AGS 0.

You don't need to keep looking unless you really don't want SI2 and if the (no?) upgrade policy isn't important to you.

Hi all and JulieN (since you seem to be the only one helping....no hard feelings to the rest though

),

I just talked to Berry at excel, and he confirmed that I would be able to upgrade to a superBcert, crediting the full amount of the AGS stone toward the superBcert. He also stated that this was a very beautiful stone, and he personally would recommend it, taking into consideration my standerds and budget. Of what I have read about Berry and Excel diamonds, he seems trust worthy. Please post any comments of warning if I am mistaken. I have three stones that I have an appointment to look at with Union tomorrow, and I will make my decision Friday.

Concerning Appraisals, Who would be a good recommendation to go to? The stone from excel would be shipped to me with original AGS cert. I was thinking, I should take it to an appraiser to have the stone verified, and then have stone set, then take back to appraiser for insurance appraisal?
Please comment if this is the right track to take.
Thank you all for your help. Pricescope has been a wonderful asset!

Did you get a copy of the report? I want to know about the girdle.

GA appraisers: https://www.pricescope.com/appraisers_GA.aspx or Barry will ship it to any of the PS appraisers for a pre-purchase appraisal, which you won't be able to attend if you're not local, but they are VERY thorough and it's not just a "Ladies 14K ring, .5 E SI2 square modified brilliant, 4.5x4.5x4.3" sort of thing.

And if you still want an Ideal Scope, www.gemappraisers.com might have some, available at their online store.

Hi,

No, I have not gotten the stats yet for the girdle, but Barry said that the AGS # was on the graded "thin" side and look good. I will still ask for the stats. Here is the link to pics that Barry posted of the girdles.

One of the stones I saw at Union I really liked. Fortunately Barry had it listed also. I would like to see how the ideal scope image compares to it. Here is unions and Barry’s links to the stone.

I also would like to see how this stone compares.
http://www.exceldiamonds.com/diamond/29186.html

I still want a .38-.42. JulieN could you please explain why a stone closer to .5 is better for princess? My GF wears a 4.5 size and said specifically that she did not want a big stone. She did not specify karats. Would a .48 "look" big on a 4.5 ring size? Barry said that when set the stone "shrinks" in look.
Does it cost anything for pricescope appraiser to see the stone? There are two listed appraiser (George Houghtaling and Stephen Turner) in GA who is the best economical choice?

Thanks for all the help.

I would not bother with a non AGS stone at this point, although you could call in the D SI2.

No, it will not look big. Even if she worked in a homeless womens' shelter or with AIDS victims in India, it would not seem ostentatious.

It is up to you, of course.

I quote Garry https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/quality-questions-1-3-t-w-princess-studs.43328/=
Tip - dont buy small princess cuts - under 1/2ct each they really seriously under perform rounds.

Maybe you can have something round in a square shaped setting - then you can have the look and the sprkle.

Will try to post more if I find what I'm looking for...

alright, this is what I wanted:

quote Garry again: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/reflected-refracted-light-scintillation-fire-brilliance.43067/=
/*a diamond is like a set of windows and mirrors. If you can see brighter parts of the environment- lights - thru the windows and mirrors then you can see a bright sparkle (and the stone scintilates).
Some stones like princess and radiants create more smaller sparkles - but these are often as a result of multiple internal reflections = less intense bright spots and if they are too weak or too small then our eye can not resolve them. Another reason why computers and fixed lighting models often fail.

Sergey has a solution, but we big need money for a large survey to calibarate his software to humans. Have a good look at this chart. It indicates the probability of a human with normal eyesight being able to see a sparkle in a diamond with x light sources. Note that as the exact same same facet structure gets larger the princess will look better than the round. if you can compare very big rounds to very big princess / radiants etc - you will find it is true.

Chart here: https://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/files/ETAS%2012round%20Princess%20Small.jpg
*/

I do not think performance difference between a .4 and a .5 wil be huge, and the E looks very nice, but splitting hairs is what we (PSers) do with pleasure.

Oh, I forgot about appraisers...well, both seem fine by what they wrote for the PS appraiser list, although the second one seems impressive... I'd just pick whoever would do it cheapest, as I would only be interested in durability of the stone (thin girdles, problematic inclusions) and a chance to see before I buy, and not so much in verifying the measurements and color/clarity. If the appraiser thought the E were closer to an F, it wouldn't kill the sale for me.

Thanks JulieN that was quite interesting. So on the chart it shows 2mm, 6mm, and 18mm are these the diameters of the diamond? How would one find the diameter of a princess?

the D is 4.05, the E is 4.36 (I just averaged the length and width)

6 mm princess is like 1.5 cts? 18 mm is something huge.

Hi all,

I went with the .48 AGS. However now I am having problems setting it. I fell in love with a Shaneco setting.....I put on layaway before buying the stone. Here is the link.http://www.shaneco.com/catalog/detail/ProductID/14302/PageLevelID/14/bRange/200/tRange/525/byo/Ring/fromPage/bridal/
My question is: Shaneco will not replace my stone if it is damaged while they are setting it. I called other jewelers and was told this a common practice.

What does pricescopers do? I am concerned because I spent all this time finding the stone only to place it in the arms of fate when being set!? I called my insurance and they confirmed that while the diamond is not in my possession they will not insure it. They did not know of any way to insure a loose stone when it is placed in the possession of the jeweler.

Please help!

Thanks

cute! that''s a setting I would pick for myself. have you seen a princess dropped into it, though?

Ship the setting to Excel and have them set your stone.

Thanks for answering so fast. Yes I did see a .3 .4 and .5. That is why I was partial to the .4. The stone was not set though it was just dropped in the prongs. Well hopefully I can get a hold of Berry before they ship it.

nevermind - should have read the rest before posting.

I am so stuck!!! Shaneco just told me if I have Barry set the stone then their life time warrenty on the ring is void! I dont know what to do!

Anybody? Is it rare to have a stone chip? Can I trust Shaneco to set my stone?

Unfortunately, it''s not about trust. Even the most talented person can run into a problem during a setting. Even the best make mistakes.

That''s the concern.

Honestly, you''re in a pickle. If Barry sets is, the setting is potentially at risk. If Shane Co. sets it, the setting is potentially at risk.

Have you exhausted every option to find a stone and a setting you like in the same place? If you have, and these are the only alternatives left to you, my suggestion would be to take the gamble on the setting instead of on the diamond.

I''m speculating (without going back to dig up info) that the setting costs less, so it''s the lesser of the two risks. Also, since stones are unique and settings aren''t, it''s harder to come up with another stone than it is another setting in the event of damage.
