Like all the other newbies I find this site a priceless treasure. I now know more about diamonds than I ever thought I would. So now my question. Is it wiser to go for quality over size and color? What I mean is, instead of searching for the largest, whitest, and highest quality stone I can find within my $4000.00 budget, should I consider searching for something like a I or J with a blue flourescence? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Maybe with a few examples of stones to compare.

Thanks in advance!

Mark

Yes, I would choose quality (as in the cut) over the size and colour. A good cut will allow the diamond to look larger and appear whiter. A well cut diamond can mask some small inclusions with its sparkle and even help a I/J stone appear warm white. Of course, a medium or strong blue florescence will help too.

If you have a Hearts of Fire dealer in your area, I would suggest going there to test your tolerance to clarity and colour. Their stones are very well cut but the pricing will make you wince. Still, it is an excellent idea to see real stones (rather than pictures online) and decide which C is more important to you.

Hi Mark

I have a beautiful J coloured diamond from Whiteflash. Its gorgeous, and faces up very white. I would definitely choose quality over colour.

If this is eyeclean (which I am sure it will be) you can get nearly a carat for your budget....

Quality of cutting is the supreme element to getting a pretty diamond. People have differing ideas about how low a color to accept or how much clarity degradation is workable, but most of us agree that the uniform itm requi9red for beauty is better cutting. Cut is not the element to sacrifice if it can be avoided. A few grades of color or clarity from the top are prefectly acceptable compromises.

Welcome!

I would say to try to look at some I and J grades in person ( GIA or AGS) to see what you think, then if you like what you see, concentrate on getting the best cut you can as it is this which brings a diamond to life, and will make a diamond of any colour grade sparkle! With the blue fluorescence, I have read some experts say you need at least medium to have any beneficial effect, but I guess that is subject to opinion.

Maisie,
Thanks for your post and link to what I think is one beautiful stone. You are not alone as I found many other glowing posts with links to it. So I grabbed it.

Wow you have to be quick around here, while I was reserving that beauty, someone was on another line doing the same and beat me to it. At least that''s what I was told. Thanks to this forum, and all who answered my original post though, I now know exactly what I am looking for, and that is such a relief. I will keep you posted.

Sorry about that, this seems to be the case now, there are a lot of people reading even that are grabbing the diamonds in question. If you see another you like, put it on hold while you are deciding just in case.

Let us know how it goes, and maybe throw a hand shot in for us. I don''t think I''ve seen that setting in real life. Very pretty!
