Hello -
I would love to hear some feedback on the feather inclusion in this diamond. It is located in the top left-hand corner, but not at the tip. The seller said it does not break the surface nor does it run to the edge of the stone.

Any thoughts?

Many thanks,
Kelly

It''s not possible to evaluate from a pic - best to send it to an independent appraiser if you''re serious about a purchase.

Makes sense. As soon as it arrives I will have it appraised. I was told by the seller that feathers get a bad rap. She assured me that their gemologist looked the stone over and did not feel there was anything to be concerned about. I''ve read many negative stories about feathers on this site. I''m getting a little paranoid. AHHH!

Thanks,
Kelly

I totally don''t know anything about problem feathers but that one looks very close to the edge of the stone. Especially in a princess I would be super paranoid that one hard knock would send that feather running to the edge and chipping the stone. I guess you have to be guided by your appraiser, and then decide if you are comfortable with it.

Hello,
I would have it looked at. The diamond does look nice. I''m wondering what clarity grade it got. in any event make sure that the feather is not touching the girdle. best of luck.

It depends on the nature of the feaither i.e. whether it is open or closed. Open feathers can be a cause for concern as they can grow during trauma (e.g. hard knocks). It is too hard to tell from your photos on what is the nature of the feather.

Thanks to everyone that posted. The clarity grade is an SI1. Here''s a link to this stone''s info and pics, just in case you''re interested!

It''s a very pretty diamond! I agree with everyone else''s advice to have an independent appraiser look at it and tell you what (s)he thinks. How are you planning on mounting it? If you''re using V-prongs, the prong may at least partially cover the area where the feather is and provide a little extra protection for it?

Thanks for your input. We are looking at a Lucida type setting. Is that a V-prong? We could also consider a half-bezel. This would provide even more protection, right?

I love the look of any kind of square diamond in a Lucida setting!

I think most Lucidas do not use v-prongs . . . just regular prongs. But you could probably have it customized with v-prongs if you want. A v-prong is v-shaped when viewed from the top, and kind of "hugs" the corner of the diamond. They''re very popular for princess-cut diamonds because of the added protection that they give to those vulnerable corners. And yes, a half-bezel (or even a full-bezel) setting would definitely give it a lot of protection!

Thanks Emm. This link will bring you to the setting we want (it is the last one to the right, item # RE518). It will need to be custom-made so we could ask them to bring the sides up flush with the stone. Do you think that would like nice? It''s a simple setting but hey, I''m a simple girl!

Rye, it''s GORGEOUS!!!

I love the wide band! Is it platinum or white gold? You said you''re thinking about having them mount it in that ring, with a half-bezel setting? I think that would look nice! But, if you want to try to protect (and maybe even cover up) that feather, you might want to consider v-prongs instead. I think the half-bezel probably wouldn''t come around the corner of the diamond quite as far as the v-prong would. BEAUTIFUL setting, though!!!

Ok, I think I understand. A V prong kind of caps the corners, making a V shape around the tips. Makes sense. Maybe we can incorporate that into the design.

Exactly! You typically only see v-prongs on princess-cut diamonds, and sometimes on the pointy tips of pears and marquise cuts. I can''t wait to see your finished ring!!!
