While searching some oval options tonight, I came across this really cool page that lists each type of stone and the ideal parameters based on cut, polish, depth, etc. Thought this might be helpful to someone else too. Wish I had seen it sooner!

I just ran across this post when I was trying to see what your diamond looked like, hairgirl. Thanks for thinking of me! This is actually one of the things that helped me to realize that mine may be less than great quality...because it was SO off the charts. I took this chart to my jeweler, and he gave me a little info about the company who created these charts. It''s a single jeweler who created and promotes these grading charts for fancy cuts as part of the marketing campaign for the company. My jeweler has been in correspondence with that jeweler at various time and thinks he''s a great guy. There''s nothing wrong about the charts, per se, but while it provides a great resource for general comparison of diamonds and ranges to stay within, it does not represent a concensus agreement among jewelers as to the grading of fancy cuts. My jeweler said anyone can create a chart like that and put it on the internet for people to use.

I appreciate Accredited Gem Appraisers for providing some insight as to what to look for in fancy cuts (because there is so little out there), but it is important to keep in mind that it is just one company''s opinion and has not had the benefit of the acceptance of jewelers around the world like the round ideal cut has. I feel like I benefited from using the chart and would recommend that others glance at it when considering a diamond to gain some perspective as to where potential problems may lie (like nearly 80% depth...hehe), but to remember that the actual personality of a fancy cuts is hard to put into numbers and often just needs to be seen in person.

Fancy cuts are so much like people....very few of us fit the ideal numbers (size/weight/height/etc) but we all appeal to SOMEONE as beautiful.

The diamond business slowly evolves, but acceptance of new information is gradual. Tradition breeds resistance to new ways of dealing while it also hsa many positive long terms effect, too. The AGA Cut Class system which I brought forward was not a marketing gimmick. It was given to the industry which allowed 110 years of family business to prosper. I no longer own AGA or the "system", but it is not one user and one opinion. Far from it.

NAJA has adopted the Cut Class system and has over 700 active members. Not every member uses the system, as this is their choice. If you use DiamCalc, you will find the AGA system is embedded for many years in it for use as a grading tool. It is really the only tool for paramtric assistance in fancy shape screening. I understand that the AGA Cut Class system is taught to budding gemologists at Moscow State University in Russia. Numerous copies of the grading charts without proper instructions or proper attribution are on websites of Internet diamond sellers all around the world.

It just takes time to get information distributed when there is little to no financial agenda attached. In the diamond business, one can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on advertising and have no real effect. Spending far less means even less notice will be taken. I figured that making it free and open would get it the attention it deserves in the long run. I still believe this was the right course to follow.

People find criticism much easier than making their own positive contribution. Over the past 20+ years there has been a bit of constructive advice which caused me to modify the system to improve it. There has also been plenty of comments which implied nothing of value would be found in the system or that no matter how poorly crafted a diamond was, someone would think it was wonderful. There are lots of consumers who buy on impulse with no knowledge. They don''t want or need any system. However, there is growing education and we''re here to help.

My saleslady was relaying to me what the jeweler said in regards to these charts, and I suspect she may not have gotten the whole story or simplified things a bit such that I got the wrong impression. Thank you for providing more of the story and a different perspective. I hope I did not offend you or disrespect all the work that has gone into making the charts. If I did so, I apologize.

No, I''m not offended or upset. There is so much good information, so much mis-information and deciding what is or isn''t reliable such a huge problem that I just keep on doing what I have been doing for a long time. Life is way too short to get annoyed about this kind of thing. It continues to give me a lot of pleasure to see people more and more able to make good decisions. If there was no validity to the parmetric screening process we would have heard solid evidence by now and I''d be withdrawing past postings......I think that scenario is very unlikely with all the time that has past.

Not only does this site not attribute Dave''s work, it has many errors and omissions.
Eg GIA do not and never did use AGS''s system

will all due respect anyone that thinks they can judge a fancy cut from a chart is delusional.
The AGA charts served a purpose for a long time when they were the best available general guidelines but they are outdated today.
