European Cut Ring Help! (Impulse buy) >>

I just got this ring. I need help from experts in here. It's a 1.43 Ct diamond ring. The centre stone is 1.03 ct F VS2 (6.4 mm) Is it the right diameter for the ct size? & the side diamonds are 0.4 all together F VS2 & they are supposed to be old miner's cut. Anything you can tell me about this ring by looking the pictures?? Is European cuts good? What about old miner cut? How different is it from normal round diamonds? What about the mount? It looks like the bottom part is blocked off. Will it affect the amount of light transfer to the diamond? Thanks in advance.

PS I live in CAnada or else, I will send this ring to the appraiser in this forum for an appraisal.

It looks like a very pretty stone from the photo and if the grading is correct it''s a nice quality stone. But...you should really have it appraised ASAP! I''m sure someone here can recommend a good appraiser in your area in Canada (you might get more info if you post a separate thread for that issue). As long as you''re not living in Moose Jaw, I''m sure there''s a good, reputable independant appraiser within driving distance. Do you already own this ring? Because it should be returnable IF the appraisal is way off from what they''re selling it to you as.

As for your question about whether or not an OEC is "good"? It''s totally subjective. Some people love the old cuts and some prefer new cuts. It''s just personal preference. I love old cuts and I think your stone looks very nice. But you have to get it appraised to make sure it''s close to what they''re selling it as.

Let us know what the appraiser says!

I haven't seen this ring in person yet. I live in Edmonton & I hope I can find a good reputable appraiser in here. I won't hesistate to return the ring if I am not happy with the result. I have heard that appraiser usually give european cut stone a lower grade these days because appraiser were not trained enough on these older cuts. Arg...if it is not for custom & duties, I will definitely send the ring to the experts in this forum for appraisal.

You are absolutely right..., due to lack of knowledge and experience... some industry professionals (appraisers etc, etc...) don''t appreciate the beauty and potential these older cuts have. They compare them to modern cuts and automatically downgrade them to re-cut material!!!

With a name like ''Oldminer''..., surely he can appreciate a beautiful old cut...

From what I can tell from your photo, it does appear that your center stone is an Old European Cut (circa 1910), and the side stones Old Mine Cuts (circa 1890, give or take). The ring appears to be more recent than the stones. Looks like late 40's or early 50's to me.

An old cut stone is clarity and color graded to the same standards as a modern cut stone. There is no downgrading due to the age of the cut. If it is an F/VS2 then it is an F/VS2. An older cut F/VS2 is going to trade at a discount though compared to a modern cut F/VS2. A simple matter of market economics. The modern cut F/VS2 is going to be a more precise cut commanding more money. Plain and simple.

The amount of discount applied to an older cut will be dictated by how well it is cut and the caliber of its light return performance. The better it is, the less the discount applied. Some exemplary Old European Cuts might come close to the value of a comparable Modern Round Brilliant Cut. Very few might command as much money as a modern cut, usually if the piece it is in is a primo period piece. This is rare though.

I live in a place where I am not close to any appraisers. (except the ones in jewelery stores) I wish I can send my rings to experts in here to do an appraisal.

I think if you post a separate thread asking for antique jewelery appraisers in your area, someone here can find someone for you that will know more about old cuts. That said, you could also simply look around for local estate jewelery shops that have nice inventory and ask them if they can refer you to an independent appraiser who is knowledgeable about old cuts. Just another option to look into.

As for placing a value on an old cut...My stone was valued at a price that appears compatible with new RBs of the same grading. It all depends on the overall quality of your stones. And given that they look lovely so far, and that the higher color grades (D-G) are very difficult to find in an old cut (many have been re-cut), I think it''s important that you find someone knowledgeable to appraise this ring.

Cant wait to see more photos on your hand and close up...and hear what the appraiser says! I''m just curious...Is it a purchase direct from owner or through a shop? I ask because I hope you have a clause to return if you need to.

I would be VERY surprised is there were no reputable appraisers in all of Edmonton who could deal wtih an antique stone. You just have to find them. Maybe start with the Yellow Pages?

Or call Birks, ask for the manager, and ask him or her for a reference. I''m sure there''s someone there... or at least in Calgary. After all, Calgary is one of the biggest cities in Canada and certainly one of the richest. It can''t be that no one is appraising antique jewelry.

Possibly Canuk-Gal (who''s in Calgary) can help? Maybe post something with her name in it to call her attention to the matter.

Surfgirl: I will "try" to find someone who is knowlegeable in old stones to do an appraisal. I will definitely post in this thread on what the appraiser say. I am allow 7 days to return this item for any reason so I feel much better. I bought this ring on ebay.

Independent Gal: I will try to find a good appraiser as soon as I can. If I can''t find anyone in Edmonton, then, I have to try Calgary. I am just worry that appraisers recommended by jewelery stores can give me biased opinions.

I grew up in Edmonton, but have been gone some decades and no longer know any appraisers who might be able to help you locally. However, I highly recommend International Gemological Laboratories Ltd. in Calgary. I have had several pieces of jewellery appraised by them. As an aside, one of the gemologists (Ron, owner) travels to Edmonton on occasion, so you might call and see if he will be in your area anytime soon. He did an appraisal for a family member who lives in St. Albert.
