Can anyone offer any tips or advice on this please?

I have a full princess eternity, 3mm wide, platinum setting, shared prong, 1.75ctw. This morning I noticed it has ever so slightly gone oval. I have worn this ring everyday for what will be 4 years in January, and this is the 4th time I've noticed its misshapen. The first time it was REALLY oval & needed a proper tightening once it was rounded again. I wear it next to my really sturdy wedding rings - a 3mm plat band & 2.5mm plat solitaire. They are both weighty rings & presumably must offer some protection? I sometimes switch my eternity to my RH if my hands are hot, but this is maybe one day a month & not so much now we're into cold weather.

Could it be a manufacture fault? Surely I can't be damaging it to this degree without noticing I've trapped my rings or something?

Thanks in advance.

I suppose it COULD be that there is a porosity issue, but idk. You could have it checked by an appraiser.

Remember that it's not just knocks that can deform or put stress on a ring, but also constant pressure, such as leaning on something, holding something heavy that is pressing on the ring, etc. We've heard of people deforming rings through gripping their steering wheel too tightly, clapping hands, and sleeping in their rings. However deforming so often does seem bizarre, and I'd have it checked for manufacturing issues by an appraiser in case.

I'm sorry you're having this trouble. From the weight and the width of the ring, I would think that there would be enough metal to make for a sturdy ring. But, It was explained to me that platinum has to be built up a little higher and wider than white gold to prevent it from bending out of round, so that may be something that you might want to ask about. Also, a ring can oval over time if it's consistently loose on your finger. If it is loose most of the time, you could look into having a small bridge placed in the bottom, which would allow your hands to expand and contract but may also take up that extra bit of space enough to prevent it from mis-shaping over time quite as much. Good luck!

Thanks for your replies & advice.

Having popped it to a Jeweller, he suggested contacting the original company my husband bought it from & letting them take a look, so he didn't straighten it out again for me. He said the ring looks like a style that would be used in a half eternity that has the integrity of a solid band area, and NOT a full eternity. The side of the setting is extremely thin & in his opinion, not strong enough.

I contacted the original vendor & they are kindly arranging a courier to collect the ring tomorrow, so that it can be taken back to London & appraised by an independent assessor. I am gutted. This ring is so sentimental, but obviously not up to its job. After the stress of having my original engagement ring written off by the Insurance company, then buying my pear cut replacement, to THEN having a handmade setting done to enable it to sit up above the claws of my eternity & prevent any damage to it, I feel a bit cursed! I am obviously not destined to own beautiful things!

My platinum e-ring did this. I hear that platinum is easily bendable. One jeweler said if you bite down on it, you can make teeth marks :o So I am getting an 18k e-ring made.... though I have to say that it was wonkied, twisted and oval shaped by the time I got done with it but it never lost any melees and it was 1.9mm shank.

Alex T,

I'm glad that it sounds like you're on your way to a solution. Since the ring is sentimental, would you consider re-setting the stones in a setting that would be more durable for you? At least, then, you would retain the stones. I would be heartbroken if this had happened to me, but I have no doubt that you will be much happpier when you have a ring that you don't have to worry about and can spend your time enjoying :-)

Thank you. And yes, if it came down to the ring being unable to be strengthened & modified, then my next ask will be to have it reset into a more durable setting. I am already feeling naked just by way of that fact that its been popped back in its box for the first time in 4 years & isn't actually on my finger! I think I am going to pour a very large glass of wine this evening :((

Would it be possible to have it made into a half eternity (or two :wink2: )? You might be able to retain the setting that hold so much meaning for you while adding some needed durability.
