Hello All,

I know this may seem like a silly question but for those of you that have eternity bands or eternity style e-rings, what do you do when putting lotion on? In 3 weeks I''ll finally be able to wear my eternity w-band

but I''m worried about lotion gunking it up. I REFUSE to take my rings off when washing and putting on lotion as I would definately end up losing them so thats not an option

. My eternity band doesn''t have any "cleaning hole" so I''m wondering if a good dish soap, hot water, and ammonia bath be enough to remove lotion residue. If it helps I have WF''s eternity band. I''m scared that my band will look cloudy and dirty.

if you won''t be taking it off during the day to wash and apply lotion, then i would definitely make sure to clean it nightly with a soft toothbrush and some cleaner. i like the stuff in the red jar (connoseiurs). actually, i would do that even if you do take off your ring during washing and lotioning! diamonds get so dirty during the day and they really need to be clean to look their best.

you could also invest in an ultrasonic cleaner and give it a good bath every now and again.

keep those diamonds clean!

I got lotion on mine once and NEVER again will I put lotion on my eternity band. I don''t think it ever came completely out of the crevices

Hopefully you''ll have better luck but I always take mine off when putting on lotion...I hate to get my rings all dingy with lotion and such

Belle - Ultrasonic cleaners aren''t recommended for pave/melee, and small stone settings because the diamonds can come out. It would however be cool for my solitaire.

Small - I would love to be able to take off my rings to put lotion on but I would forget to put them back on. It used to happen all the time when I had my highschool and then college school rings on. I had a horrible habit of putting them in my pocket then forgetting to take them out. Not a good situation when you go to wash them or hang up your clothes.

Maybe Mara and other eternity ring owners could chime in.

I would also never put lotion on with my ring. It would immediatly look gunky and cloudy. That would drive me crazy. But if you don't want to take yours off, the only solution is to clean it every night. Most of us do that anyway. I have an eternity w-band from WF and a 3/4 eternity band on my e-ring. I don't use an ulrasonic cleaner but some women around here do, even with eternity bands. I wouldn't do it all of the time but you could do it once in a while. I find that my ring stays very clean by washing it each night with a baby toothbrush, warm water, and Dawn. Once a week I wash it in ammonia and warm water which makes it incredibly sparkly. But I also don't put lotion on with my rings on. I don't know if washing them by hand would get all lotion residue off.

Thanks Jazmine. It looks like I''m going to have to take the rings off if I don''t want my band to look cloudy. Hmmmm maybe I could nvest in a cheap WG necklace and put my rings on it before washing my hands/putting lotion on. It''s a start. Oh the things we go through to keep our rings sparkly.

I got a manicure one time and she surprised me with the lotion rub before I could squeak out that I wanted to take my ring off....the depths that lotion got into the ring...ugh. Thankfully I have an ultrasonic, which took care of it, but I don''t even wear my rings to the salon anymore when I get my nails done!!!

The very same thing happened to me while getting a massage. They informed me to leave the rings on and I figured they would work around the rings - it urked me that they ended up putting massage oil all over my rings!!! EEEKK!

You''ll probably scream when I tell you that not only do I apply lotions, but I condition my hair and sometimes wear a set of those Bath and Body gel gloves (w/lotion) to bed with my eternity ring on. I find that a 2 minute ultrasonic bath with a drop of Dawn and a cap of ammonia does the trick!

I take my rings off before bed and put them in my jewelry box, then I put on lotion before bed. I know that you said you don''t like to take them off, but do you take them off to sleep?

kcoursolle,

I take my rings off when I sleep because my fingers swell and I see no need to wear them in my sleep. I also take them off when at home when I wash my hands and put lotion on. At first I thought about using a necklace but trying to loop rings onto a chain without them falling is risky. I think that since I always have my purse with me maybe I''ll just carry a ring box in it at all times. I simply refuse not to put lotion on after washing my hands. I am a moisturizing fanatic.

We''ll see what happens. I''ll be able to wear my eternity band in several days (9/05/06

I have a wee trick as I cannot stand gunky diamonds. If I absolutely have to apply lotion with my rings on, I don't get the lotion on the ring finger and that helps it stay clean. Still bothers me though and keep looking for smudges

tmdblue-

I would get into the habit of placing your rings in a ring holder or your pocket when you wash your hands and apply lotion. Not only to keep your rings from getting gunky but so you don''t get ring rash!

TMD, "small stone settings" aren''t problematic for an ultrasonic.

Ultrasonic cleaners aren''t recommended for some pave and micropave because there is so little metal holding the diamonds in to begin with.

However, I think we assume your mean a standard eternity band, which is typically prong-set. If so, Belle is right that the ultrasonic is the way to go.

I have a shared-prong w-band (not eternity, but 7-stone), and it gets cleaned several times weekly in the u/sonic. Mara''s w-band is a full eternity, and she uses the u/sonic every other day with her rings.

Where can the Ultrasonic be purchased at? Or is there a place where you can get a better deal on it than most places. I''d be in the market for one since I''ve heard such great things about it from PS''ers on here!

Here you go Rosebud, if you are in the mood for a lot of reading

, this thread should tell you all you need to know, plus where to purchase.

Thanks Lorelei!! I believe that is where I had seen it in a SI before. I am going to buy one for sure!! Is that how they typically clean it in the jewelry stores in the mall when you ask them to clean it? I find it is hard to get the underside of the diamonds with a brush.

Aljdewey,

Thanks for the clarification about ultrasonics and small stones. I didn''t know that it was fine to use on shared prong eternity settings. A PSer posted about a professional grade mini US by Otto Frei for around $70. I''m thinking about investing in it in the very near future.

I use the SI ultrasonic almost daily because my rings do get filthy, and sometimes it takes a few passes through the cleaner to get it all out!! I take off my rings when I put lotion on but only in safe places..aka at my desk where they are sitting right in front of me and can be put back on, or at home etc...I don''t like putting lotion on with the rings because they inevitably get smudged and have you ever seen a smudged lotiony diamond? It''s gross. Take some lotion on your finger and press your finger on your diamond. Cloudy city. Totally not how I want to be walking around all day. I''d rather have alligator skin than a cloudy stone. So I just put lotion on when I can.

The shared prong settings can definitly go in the US. So can most pave and melee rings, as long as they are well-made. It''s more if you don''t get your rings maintenanced regularly to check for loose stones to begin with OR you have a ton of melee and pave and relatively little metal that I would worry. But shared prong, I don''t think so. Mine are prong set but I have no worries in the US and I also use it for my 10 stone shared prong and other fashion rings with melee. I''d rather the stone falls out in the US if it is going to anyway, than on the street somewhere!

My bands are shared prong with very small stones (2 pointers) and not a one has fallen out in the ultrasonic yet!

Can anyone tell me where I can buy an Ultrasonic cleaner in the UK? I''ve had my anniversary diamond ring now since early May. I love it. It sparkles beautifully and to keep it clean I''m soaking it every day in Fairy Liquid (brand name washing up liquid in the UK) and brushing it gently over the sink, with the stopper in the plughole, just in case! However, I''ve read about these Ultrasonic cleaners but don''t know if I can get one here.
