Hi Everyone

I''m in the process of getting a platinum eternity band made and was faced with some choices from the jeweler:

1) pave stone size? (I''ve narrowed it down to a 4prong set with a very thin wall of metal on either sides of the diamond so it doesn''t scratch the prongs on my current e-ring). My e-ring is a carat in a simple 4 prong-Tiffany inspired setting, so he suggested having the eternity band around 2.5-2.8mm wide. What size diamonds do you think would fill this space on a size 5 finger?

2) I was asked if I wanted drainage holes behind the band or closed metal. After looking at eternity bands online, I find that almost all have these holes, which leads me to think they are there for a good reason. Would those holes allow more dirt under the diamonds, or on the other hand make it easier to clean? If it were closed can water etc. still get behind the diamonds? Your thoughts/opinions on this?

3) Initially we were going to go with a 3/4 eternity, but figured I may as well do the full eternity since spinning of the ring wouldn''t matter. I am aware eternities are harder to size later on. Should I have him make it 1/4 size larger now for some leeway or maybe have him leave ~5mm of metal at the bottom (then the question is, is it still a full eternity band)?

Your opinions are most appreciated!

1. It looks like you can go with 5 pointers.
0.05 = 2.4mm
0.07 = 2.7mm
So if you add in the metal at the sides and all, I think 5 pointers should do it, or even 6 pointers.

2. I like the holes at the bottom for cleaning. Even if you go without the holes, yes, water and dirt can accumulate under/behind the diamonds.

3. If you chose to have a 5mm spacing of metal, it is considered a 3/4 eternity ring, not a full eternity. 1/4 size may not be sufficient for the long term. Some people really gain or lose weight over time and can change up to 1 full ring size over their lifetime. If you are done with childbearing, you are most probably fine, otherwise, the 5mm spacing is best.

Get the holes, get the spacing for sizing later if necessary. I don''t believe you can generally size eternity bands at all unless you leave a bit without stones.

You may have seen my posting above about my can''t-resize-my eternity band mess. I highly recommend having even a small sizing area on the bottom of your ring. A well-fitted ring doesn''t spin all that much, and having this option down the line can save you a ton of money and heartache.

In my SQHO,

1) pave stone size? (I''ve narrowed it down to a 4prong set with a very thin wall of metal on either sides of the diamond so it doesn''t scratch the prongs on my current e-ring). What size diamonds do you think would fill this space on a size 5 finger?

I would try to keep close to .5mm free on each side of the stones for bead and bright cutting. Point four millimeters in a pinch. This would allow stones of about 1.7mm. Doing this in my head, somewhere between 32 and 36 stones. Just about a carat in goods.

In recent years, a lot of eternity rings are being made, particularly micro pave without the holes or azures.

That last 5mm free area is almost useless for sizing. Unless laser welding, stones will need to be removed to weld the platinum properly. You might as well set them all the way around. Often, if the ring is well made, and you don''t want to fit a piece and weld it, a little stretching and a little stock removal from the inside will suffice. If you have to, remove stones and weld. Make sure that you have a good jeweler.
