just wondering if anyone has ever taken this medication? outcomes? side effects?

my dr. called in a prescription for me and i think it is for tension headaches (i didn''t actually talk to him, just left a message with the triage nurse and that''s what she called me back with to say he did).

Hey Mimzy

Just did a quick search of the BNF and could not find it but that may be because it is not licensed in the UK.

searched Wiki and it came up with a few bits and bobs:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fioricet

Essentailly it contains a painkiller - paracetamol,
a barbituate - a mild relaxant/sedative - this will make you drowsy!
caffeine - it makes the pain killer more effective

I use Syndol for tension headaches and it works a treat, although I''m not sure if it is licensed in the US - it is an over the counter med here. I also put a heat pack on my upper traps to help relax them as I carry a lot of tension there.

Hope that helps and you feel better

Take care

Lizzie

This is my MIRACLE DRUG. Seriously.

I've had awful tension headaches since I was a teenager... enough that I developed severe tendonitis in my neck from the constant muscle strain. My doctor tried every form of headache pain relief out there (Voltarin, Midrin, Maxalt, Imitrex, anti-depressants, etc) and nothing helped... until I tried the Esgic Plus. It has been unbelievable for me... not even the slightest side effect (and I tend to be sensitive to meds)... no fatigue, no wired feeling, no fuzzy feeling. Just total relief from the headache within 30 minutes or so. If it is a particularly bad one (to the point of nausea/vomiting), I'll take 2 pills, but often just 1 is enough. I try not to take it more than 2x/week because I am paranoid about overusing it and becoming "immune", but I've been taking it for years now (up until this pregnancy) and it still works perfectly every time I need it.

Let me know if you have any other questions... and I'll keep my fingers crossed that it works just as well for you!

ETA -- It is the same combo of drugs as Fioricet (acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine). Fiorinal and regular Esgic are a couple of the other variations... some use aspirin instead of acetaminophen, some add codeine, and some don't contain caffeine. Barbituates are "downers" that do tend to induce drowsiness, but the caffeine counters it for me (the caffeine's actual function is to constrict blood vessels that are dilated during a headache), and I honestly have never felt tired from taking it. And I'm usually the person that takes 1 Benadryl and sleeps for 12 straight hours.

Same here - miracle drug for me. No negative side effects at all. One thing though - I am on the pill and taking Esgic Plus will make me spot with break through bleeding. I''ve never gotten pregnant - but I try not to take it within a few hours of the birth control pill.

thank you all so much for your input! hopefully it''ll work well for me too
