Exactly they should have been locked down instead of free to leave. This is going to take so much longer to recover from because people don't care about others, just completely selfish.

Yep.
I'm particularly pleased most of them went to neighbouring France (country I am currently living in) . Since they can't get home by plane (they'd need proof of the quarantine they ran away from), they went over the border by car et voilà, you can't even prove where &when & how they arrived so easily anymore.
France had closed their borders for inbound flights from GB and also closed the skiing circus . The Swiss didn't want to miss the business and realized a little late what a sh*tshow that mutated strain is. Then quarantined the Brits who were already there.

Several owners of the five star hotels said they understand. It was such a horrible situation being in a luxury hotel room as a family that they fully understand and turned a blind eye to their escape. Disgusting.

To be fair, it is widely speculated that the only reason the new strain was discovered in the UK is because the UK extensively tests for new strains where as other places do not. It may not even have originated in the UK.

The profile in the infection numbers in most countries (sudden upkick in november) suggests strongly that the new stain is already everywhere -- US included. I believe there is already concrete evidence the new strain is in the netherlands and denmark.

While the people should not have done what they did. This is probably not how the new strain gets everywhere..... that happened at an earlier stage when countries did not do enough to monitor the pandemic/test for new strains.

And they have already agreed that the new strain originated in South Africa & arrived in the UK by South African travellers, initially 2 of them to different parts of the country. The African scientists have been really open about this & were the first to discover this new strain.
