After reviewing all of the great advice on this forum for the past several weeks, I was able to pull the trigger on a great 1.1ct stone that fit well into my budget.

My question now pertains to the setting. I've recently just received the fully completed ring back from the local jeweler and I feel a little less than thrilled about the final product. My main issue is the "basket" that is holding the ring in place.

Initially I hoping to get a setting that was closer to the "Classic Tiffany" style setting.

And instead ended up with a setting very similar to this one from Bluenile:

The prongs, when viewed from the side, just seem very bulky and over bearing..
The jeweller stated that in his opinion, spacing out the prongs as much as they could allows for more light to penetrate the diamond.

Is there truth to what he is saying? Does the wider spacing of the prongs truly allow for a more brighter shine?
I may be able to over look the design difference if it does in fact make a difference.
My preference was to go with a more whimsical look of the prongs, as shown on the tiffany setting, and they do have an inhouse style very close to it (the one I originally thought was being created). What are the experts opinions on the matter?

Should I also expect to pay more if i decide to make changes for the ring?

Looks like they have completely different "baskets." The tiffany style uses six kind of separate "V" shapes, each of the tops meeting and uniting with the next V top which forms a total of six unified prongs. Where the bottoms of the Vs join at the shank, they look a little more curved or scalloped as they are separate Vs until they go up further. However, the metal where the separate V bottoms join, do kind of take up some diamond real estate for viewing enjoyment and possibly light penetration.

The crown head on the blue nile link you showed looks completely different - the pegs are very blunt with squared edges. Completely different from the flowy, curvy design of the tiffany style. I think that they also make the tiffany style heads in a four-prong. I would have gone four-prongs had I made my ring to order, however, I bought it pre-loved. I have a Stuller Solstice setting for my solitaire which is very similar to the tiffany style head. It holds an 8mm stone so I like the security, but still ponder one day swapping the crown out for four prongs. Maybe someday. I know other manufacturers also offer tiffany-style heads in their rings.

...in his opinion, spacing out the prongs as much as they could allows for more light to penetrate the diamond.
:?: Wouldn't six prongs going around a one carat stone be spaced equidistant regardless of whether they are prongs you like or prongs you don't like? I know he probably meant that the bottom of the tif-style prong arrangement shows more metal, but if you have a super stone that you love, you oughta get the setting that you love.

Perhaps your jeweler could let you know whether he could change out the crown for a tiffany style crown (in either six or four prongs)? If so, he could price that out in different options. (and see it first, since you thought that was what you were getting - which it doesn't look even close). Or perhaps you can totally exchange the setting entirely (esp. if it wasn't custom) for something else you love.

You can keep your eye on pre-loved here on PS, DB, or LT for a setting you love. Not a definitive answer for you, but I can totally get why you were disappointed when you had one thing in your mind's eye and you had another thing actually delivered.

Let us know what you decide (and post some pics) ;))
