ERD "A Cut Beyond" vs. August Vintage cushion?

Hi! This is my first post here, although I've been lurking/researching for the past month or so. I am making an engagement/wedding set upgrade (woohoo!), and both my husband and I have decided on a cushion cut solitaire, probably with a pave band. (My wedding ring will be a plain, thin band, and I will also wear a 9-stone shared prong band as well.)

Basically, this is boiling down to either:

go with the beautiful, unique look of the August Vintage Cushion
or
for the same money, get about a half carat larger "A Cut Beyond" Vintage cushion from ERD

Every day I change my mind! This morning I decided the smaller size was worth the special effects of the AVC. This afternoon, I'm thinking, hey, bigger is better!

Anyone sorted through this dilemma before? Thanks!

I think they both have beautiful personalities, I would get the bigger stone :twirl:

For an entire half carat more for the same price I would absolutely get the ERD A Cut Beyond cushion!

yep! I agree they are both beautiful but for a whole 1/2ct more I would go with the a cut beyond for sure!!

Maybe this isn't as difficult a decision as I was making it! :)

What size stones are we talking about? 1/1.5, 1.5/2cts - no brainer, the bigger one (assuming it faces up bigger!) But bigger than maybe 2/2.5... I don't know! Size differences are less visible on larger stones, and increases in ct weight translate into smaller increases in mm.

I'm thinking about the 2 carat range. I've been really surprised by how much variation in the actual measurements there can be! But depending, some of the stones are a full mm larger in length/width, and I know that makes a huge (and good, to me!) difference, particularly in a solitaire setting. Yet at the same time, there is something about the August Vintage that I am drawn to, and I don't want to wake up one day wishing I had those pretty pastel lights dancing on my hand!

I agree with Yssie that it depends on the size of the stones.

 It's easy to sit back and decide for someone else. We don't have the same level of commitment to it that you do. If your disappointed in your choice, we will feel bad, but YOU will be kicking yourself! I think that Yssie makes a great point. If you prefer the AVC and you won't be getting a much bigger spread by going with the cut beyond, then that is definitely something to consider. I just went and looked at both cuts again, and they are both beautufully cut diamonds. I think either way, your upgrade sounds like it's going to be gorgeous!!

ETA can you order in both stones and compare for yourself? Have you seen either in person?

I haven't, but really, ordering both and then sending one back (although I hesitate to put everyone through that much hassle!) might be the way to go. And thanks! I really hope everything turns out beautifully when all's said and done!

I think .5 carat should be a pretty big mm difference in the 2 carat range, so I would get the Cut Beyond.

Another vote for the "A Cut Beyond!" I would definitely go for size! Plus, I thought working with Chris Anadiotis was fantastic (although you can't go wrong working with Jon either!). I also prefer the slightly less obvious maltese cross in A Cut Beyond diamonds.

I'm another vote for "A Cut Beyond" and getting the extra .5 ctw and size. Both stones are lovely in their own right, but people (and YOU!) will see size first, then cut.

As Christina said above, its easy to give advice, but you are the one that has to love what you purchased. I know it's a hassle to bring both in, but it is done regularly and the vendors want you to have a good experience and be happy with your purchase, so I think that may be your better option - see them both IRL and then decide.

Good luck!

Can you show us the actual two diamonds you are considering? Seeing the actual diamonds will help me make a choice :)

This. I would definitely go for the "A Cut Beyond".

Well..... What stone did you decide on, and can we see pictures??

I am curious, too, because we never got the measurements of the two stones. The AVC could have been the same diameter or even larger since a lot depends on cut and depth on cushions. Since AVC's are ideal cut, they sometimes face up larger than another cushion that is cut deeper.

I agree.
When comparing cushions, I was amazed at the variation in spread.
What are the measurements?

I love my 2.6ct cut beyond from ERD...Chris was great and the stone is gorgeous! Check out my Show me the Ring post.
