I purchased an diamond engagement ring about 10 years ago from a jeweler that was recommended to me. The diamond was not certified, but the jeweler/gemologist that sold it to me appraised it as 1.22 ct, SI1, E. He did not disclose to me either verbally or on the appraisal he provided with the ring that it was an enhanced stone.
I noticed a feather inclusion visible with the eye when looking at the stone from the side after I had cleaned it. I thought it may have been accidentally damaged, and upon taking it to the jeweler that was referred to by my insurance company, they indicated that the diamond has been previously fracture filled and laser drilled.
Taking the ring back to the jeweler I purchased it from, he denied selling enhanced stones during that time. He offered to have the EGL USA lab in L.A. certify the stone, and to discuss the next steps after the certification is returned. I agreed to let him do that. I just want to get what I thought and told I was paying for.

What can I expect the certification to disclose?
Will it validate what the other jewelers told me about the enhancements?

Any suggestions regarding how to handle this situation is appreciated.

bump...

this seems like an important issue, anyone have any answers?

first of all, if you suspect that the jeweler may have deceived you, do NOT return the diamond to that jeweler for certification. you can submit the diamond to a lab yourself, and deal with the lab and get the results directly.

once you get the results, you can then decide on a course of action if any is needed.
