Does an engagement ring have to have an engraving on the side from the store you got it from? Does it make it any better or classy or expensive? Is it important?
Jewelry sold in the USA that is karat stamped, or stamped Platinum, is supposed to also be accompanied by a registered trademark nearby the karat or fineness stamping. Some trademarks, like Tiffany & Co, do have special provenance indicating that the item was originally sold from one of their stores. Since they charge according to how the market perceives the added value a fine name store adds to an item, it may be important later on, if one wishes to sell the item, that such a trademark is in the piece. The initial recipient may also be duly impressed that the buyer spent the extra bucks to purchase an item from such a fine place.
That being said, there are tons of counterfeit and put together items that are not from famous makers or just parts from old items and not original. Being selective with "bargains" or second hand items means not believing everything you see on the jewelry itself, or read on Ebay.
No one is qualified to determine where YOU spend your money except yourself and your spouse. If you want a $200 dinner tonight instead of a frozen pizza from the microwave, that's your choice. If you want Cartier and not Zales, the choice is in your hands. You might be able to buy what either retailer sells on the Internet for less money, too. However, if having the item contain the Cartier or Zales trademark stamp inside means something important to you, then that's your decision. It can't be all that wrong, since so many people do make the choice to buy a known brand rather than by price or some other determinant.
