I was just reading that Marc Jacobs officially got engaged and bought his fiance a diamond solitaire. My BGF who is in a committed relationship is thinking about proposing to his boyfriend. Are there any specific lines of engagement rings for men? Wedding bands are easy to find but I am not sure what would work as an engagement ring and where he could find one. Any ideas?

There are not any engagement ring lines for men that I am aware of. We had a same sex lesbian couple that had two of the same rings made with garnets, one had a deep red stone and the other had a pinkish purple one. I believe they were their wedding rings too. Men''s rings are harder I''d say because if they get too thin, they look dainty and feminine, too thick and they are too bulky and uncomfortable. I''d suggest maybe a tension set diamond ring with a matching band?

Something like this perhaps?

The thing to keep in mind is that any ring can be an engagement ring. We have plenty of people around here who get engaged with diamond eternity bands, plain bands or no rings at all. Whatever floats the person''s boat.

I agree ... tension settings are unique and the best I can think of for a men''s engagement ring. It has a center stone, but with a thicker band, and there are many unique metals, stones, and styles ... here are a few of my favorite websites with tension settings (and some other unique settings)

http://boonerings.com/ ... http://boonerings.com/stone.htm

... also Boone has some interesting wood inlayed rings and all wood rings that are different and intersting

if he doesn''t find anything he likes and has an idea of what would be perfect, he can always go the custom route

Freke is right, you can really go any way you like and that makes the couple happy! But if you''re looking for some more guided advice...

I saw this on Pearlman''s site awhile ago and thought that it was really great. They have a lot of options in their partnership collection. Goodluck and let us know how it goes!

Another option may be a puzzle ring. Most married men tend to only wear one ring. A puzzle ring is a two piece ring that when put together looks like one ring. He could propose with one piece of the puzzle ring and then at the wedding add the additional piece to complete the ring.

An example:
