Hi All,

I am about to buy an engagement ring (in the UK) at an online dealer, and since I am a hopeless beginner (allhtough I have tried to pick up as many pointers as I could in here).

Before I accept, I wondered if someone in here would be able to provide a last minute advise.

The ring is a platinum ring with a center-diamond + 5 shoulder diamonds on each side and the price is USD 5500.

Am I being riped off or what do you think?

The center diamond is GIA certified:

Round Brilliant
Measurements: 6.16 - 6.20 x 3.87 mm

Carat Weight: 0.90 carat
Color Grade: E
Clarity Grade: SI1
Cut Grade: Excellent
Proportions:
Depth: 62.6%
Table: 56%
Crown Angle: 36.0°
Crown Height: 16.0%
Pavilion Angle: 41.0°
Pavilion Depth: 43.5%
Star length: 55%
Lower Half: 80%
Girdle: Thin to Medium, Faceted (3.5%)
Culet: None
Finish:
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence: Medium Blue
Clarity Characteristics:
Crystal, Cloud

The center stone did not score fantasticly in the Holloway Cut Adviser (5.3 = good).

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Pavilion angle is too big for that crown angle, there will be leakage making the stone look worse than it could be, best angle for that crown is around 40.5-40.6.

Welcome!

This is what we call a classic steep deep diamond, the crown and pavilion angles are thus too steep and deep to work well together, this diamond will leak light and not be attractive. The diamond is also too deep for my taste.

You can do much better, I would pass on this diamond. Is it being sold with Blue Nile?

Thanks a lot!

Very helpful!

No I am dealing with diamond heaven here.

Maybe I should pass on this one then. The specs looked quite nice for the untrained eye.

Whenever they present me with a rock that seems to have all the right specs, but then I check the GIA report, the characteristics scare me off.

Any characteristics that is easier to live with than others?

Most welcome!

I would definitely pass on this one, it won''t sparkle well and you could notice dark patches on the surface of the diamond.

Thanks, much appreciated.

As in SI1 inclusions? A considerable amount of these can be eyeclean, just make your expectations known to the seller. What scares you with inclusions? It is unusual that SI inclusions are an issue, clouds in SI1 can occasionally dull brilliance, more common in SI2 though. Feathers aren't always problematic if they don't break the surface for example. If you aren't comfortable though with SI, maybe VS2 and above might be a better fit for you, more what we call ' mind clean.'

Just as a suggestion, there is an online seller in London, Dr Indira Marchant at www.bestdiamonds.co.uk Indira posts here and is a lovely lady as well as a true expert. She works with online sales but also sees clients by appointment.

Thanks again! Will check out bestdiamonds.

This one looks very promising! Check it is eyeclean to your standards by asking the seller and the med blue fluorescence is a bonus in a J colour in my opinion!

Thank you. I am a little worried that it would look to small (0.7 ct) on a shouldered ring, but probrably not if it is so well cut.

I may go for this one.

Thanks again.

Lorelei,

OK I am down to two stones know, either the 0.7 above or this 0.9 (also a J):

No worries, this one also looks great!

Not even the "FLUORESCENCE Negligible" ?

Will I manage without blue Fluorescence, even if it is a J?

It wouldn't worry me, the cut is topping and that will help the J face up extremely well, fluorescence is nice but it wouldn't worry me to not have it in a super cut like that. This diamond is a bit bigger too....
