Hi,

I am thinking about buying this engagement ring (2,034). Here are the specs:

Shape - Round
Carat - .75
Lab - GIA
Color - H
Clarity - SI1
Polish - EX
Symmetry - Very Good

What do you think?

Also, should i get a four or six prong setting? Any suggestions

Thanks

The details which are missing from your description are crucial to knowing how to proceed. If the diamond is a reasonably fine cut, the $2034 is in line with reality. The numbers and facts which you did not post make it impossible to judge this stone on its merits.

We need more information to determine anything about the diamond.

Table %
Depth %
Crown and pavillion angles
Girdle
Star% and lgf% if possible

Here is the info:

Table - 57%
Depth 61.3%
Girdle - medium

The sheet that i have doesn''t list crown angle and pavilion.

Is that important? I can ask the dealer if you need more info.

Thanks

The angles are crucial to being able to determine performance.

If you could get the GIA report #, that would work, too. You can go to

http://www2.gia.edu/reportcheck/index.cfm

and enter the report # and carat weight and it will show all the information,

yap, those are important in determining the cut of the stone and hence the price.
Ask for the GIA report number.

here it is:

What do you think? What about four or six prong setting? Thank you

I''d pass on that one. The pavillion angle is too steep, which will result in light leakage and less than ideal performance.

As far as setting, four or six prong is personal choice. The general argumentsfor each is that a four prong can make a round diamond look a little more square while a six prong will look more round. A well made setting will be secure no matter how many prongs--you still need to take it in yearly for inspection.

I''d suggest either looking through pics in the Show Me the Ring subforum or looking at the two styles in person to decide which you prefer. Both are classic looks and one is not intrinsically better than the other, so it just your choice.

Thanks,

What angle should i look for in a diamond, so i can get ideal performance? Or should i go with Hearts and Arrow Diamond?

sdeserio,

Look for a crown angle between 34 - 35, maybe 35.1
Pavilion angle between 40.6 - 41

The steeper the crown angle, the shallower the pavilion should be, and vice versa.

Just to add to what Laila mentioned...

depth 60-62 %
table 54-57%

(the crown and pavilion angles above are in degrees)

EDIT
Here is a .7 in your price range

Here is another diamond i was looking at: I noticed that the Pavilion angle is .2 over the mark that you said, however everything else is in range. This diamond costs $1,953. What do you think? I am, learning so much. Thanks a lot. Thanks for the link. I am going to look into that.

That one could still be safe. Can you get an Idealscope image so we can make sure there is no leakage?

You can use this tool to give you a good estimate of the cut of a diamond you are interested in:

https://www.pricescope.com/cutadviser.asp

The second diamond scores a 3 and so would be rejected. Look for diamonds that score under 2, and then see if you can get an idealscope image to confirm the cut quality. Alternatively, view the contender in person and examine them in many lighting environments. Or buy your own Idealscope, it costs $25, and take it with you to view them.

Ditto.

Try downloading it to your computer, then uploading to PS from there.

yes, give it a unique name and make sure it is under 100k. And you should probably delete your e-mail if you can, it isn''t allowed on PS.

Just to add, don''t use any unusual characters in the filename.

I tried to upload the image, but it is giving me an error. I think it is because it is a ".gif image" Not sure how else to send it. Any suggestions

Ok, not to worry. Email the image to admin using the report concern button and they will post it for you.

If you are using windows, then you can you paint and save it as a jpg.

It looks like it is embedded in my email. So, it doesn''t look like i will be able to attach the image.

Can you save the image from the email to your computer Stephen? If you could save it to your pictures then you could post it that way, thats what I normally do with email attached images.

The person that i am working with told me the 0.75 H SI1 is a tad better in terms of light return. What do you think? Thanks
