Confused:

My girlfriend indicated that we should like either a Round or Princess ring with the following caveat. A round ring in a solitaire setting or a princess ring with two sidestones (one on each side). I’m about to start searching for a ring and am not sure which direction to go as these are very different styles/shapes! Either way, I will be looking for a 1.25 ct, G, VS1/2, ring. It seems the round ring is the most popular sold from an engagement standpoint. Since I really don’t want to be pricing out and comparing two different shapes [one is confusing enough], any suggestions on where I should focus! In the end she said she would be fine with either and would trust my judgement!

While I’m not sure there is a right/wrong answer, I would appreciate any advice or suggestions.

Rounds are more classic, face up bigger, and hide inclusions and color better than princess cuts. Plus, they tend to have the most sparkle of any of the cuts. I would personally go with that. Some women say they definitely want a princess cut, and that''s what they should have. But someone who is on the fence about what she prefers may be better off with the more timeless shape, as a round solitaire will never be out of style.

One more thing, rounds are generally easier to shop for by numbers too. Good luck!

Welcome to Pricescope Fletch,

I agree with Kelli, unless she is really leaning towards a Princess, then a round might be the safest choice.

I would go with the round. My first engagement ring was an asscher (square shape) but I ended up trading it for a round with faces up bigger & sparkles more.

I am no expert but I completely agree with Kelli. I find that princess cuts have a very different look and unless someone really likes it and has a strong preference for it .... they may regret it in the future. Go with the round - timeless and gorgeous. Not sure if rounds cost more than princess cuts .. I know they are much more than cushions.

Thanks to everyone for your input and advice! I now feel better! I will begin searching for a round ring this week! I''m sure I will reconsult pricescope as I line up a few options!

Good advice from everyone who has posted so far.
Also, if ever she wanted the other 3 princess cut diamond ring - you could:
a) trade in your round brilliant - its the most popular and most expensive shape so is easier to trade
b) or if you are feeling really generous in future she can always have the 3 princess ring as a dress ring for a significant anniversary or major event (birth of first child)!
