I am tryign to get a diamond for an enagement ring and the stone cutter is trying to push a 2ct. D color, IS1. Everywhere I read, it says that IS1 has visible inclusions. Should I try to stay away from it? Is there a particular Clarity I should limit the search to?

Hi Val,

Do you mean I1 clarity? If so then a diamond of this size and clarity might show visible inclusions but it depends. Your best bet is to work with a trusted vendor who can inspect each diamond for you. SI clarity grades can be eyeclean but again it is best to have a trusted professional working with you so they can advise which SI clarity diamonds are eyeclean to your standards and which are not.

For an engagement ring of this size, I would look at GIA or AGS graded SI1 clarity and above, some SI2 might be eyeclean but all SI clarity grades need careful evaluation as above.

Lastly make sure you make your expectations known concerning the ' eyecleanliness' of each diamond to the vendor. Clarity grading is performed face up so if you don't want to see any visible inclusions from any angle at close scrutiny, make sure you tell the vendor that so you are both on the same page.

Also the cut of the diamond is crucial for beauty, so if you want post the proportions of any diamond you are interested in here, and we can give it the once over for you.

Also what shape is the diamond you are considering, is it a round and which lab grade?

You are having it custome cut from rough?

If he can cut it such that it is still eye-clean, no harm and you will get a much cheaper stone. It is possible for a reliably graded stone, by GIA/AGS to be eye-clean even to I1. It is case by case, SI1 having the largest proportion of eye-clean stones. VS2 range have some rare instances of eye-visible inclusions or if you have very acute eyes.
