Hello I'm new here I have no experience in ring design however, I have designed this engagement ring for my fiancé. I wanted something unique that would also provide a reasonable amount of protection as she plans on pursuing geology. I havent seen anything like it, and that may be for a reason. Longitude protection provided by the half bezel and latitude protection provided by the angle that contorts over the girdle to avoid striking a clevage plane. It is to house a 3/4 carat stone and be made of platinum (pl90ir10). I'm worried about seperation in the split shank design. Any constructive criticism is welcomed. Thanks in advance!

First- Hit report concern up at the top corner and ask them to move this to rocky talky. You'll get more people to respond.

Second- but her whatever design she wants. Regardless of design, she shouldn't be wearing it while working of she's going into any geology field. Shell need to take it off, so I'd insyeadbuy a ring she rally likes and then a necklace to pop the ring onto when she is working.

If this design is one she likes, keep it up, but don't design this only with her job in mind and not hwe style, because she really shouldn't be wearing it at work anyways.

Thanks I did report concern and apologies I wasn't really sure where to put this. Well I wouldn't expect her to wear it in the field in exceptionally dirty circumstances. I have discussed it with her but she says, "I trust your taste."

Honestly? it reminds me of a human eye. Sorry for being blunt.

I assume you are in the design field and have good CAD experience.

Might I suggest you go ring shopping with her (so much fun!) to get an idea of what styles she is drawn to and then design your own ring drawing inspiration from the expedition?

Jewellery is such a personal thing; what I like someone else might hate and vice versa. Also, with whichever jeweller you go with, ask them to make up a silver model of it first to check you really like the design you created.

Best of luck to you, and congratulations!

I love that you're designing it but it does remind me of an eye, specifically the ancient Egyptian eye. That may or may not be to her taste. The reason behind the design is really smart, well protected however the 'safest' design would probably be a bezel or tension setting (depending on style).

It does indeed strikingly resemble an eye haha no offense taken in the slightest. The thing is she is depending on my taste, what she wants is for me to pick it which makes no sense to me but that is what she wants.

Does she have a pinterest? Typically if she does she will pin or "like" jewelry she likes.

I have some ideas of settings that would be protective yet more feminine, but I don't know if you would want to start over, or if you have a lot of money in this already.

Also, I'm not just concerned about the dirt. Also chemicals or dinging it against rocks or other things is bad for the ring too.

Then, last question, though I know I'm throwing a lot at you. Diamonds are her thing? I ask only because I've seen a few times before where people who are really into rocks or geology often want something a bit more rare. If she's said she's a diamond gal, I totally get it, (I am too ) lol. But just from what I've seen on PS over the years, often times stones that are more rare speak to their personality and interests.

Sorry no Pinterest, I dont mind starting over it doesn't take long to build something In cad the stone in my opinion was the hard part. Im just looking for some input any ideas are more than welcomed feel free to post any bezel / 1/2 bezel or some solid tension settings. Thanks everyone so far! Opening my eyes to thinking about beauty vs rigidity.

Sholdt comes to mind as designer that makes very well designed bezels and half bezels. They even do one similar to your design, which makes meme think the answer to your original question is that it is durable, just not common.
MaeVona is another company that makes a few designs that are very sturdy. One in particular called the fern is a lovely design in a half bezel with some accent stones. In on my phone now so I can't link too many. But google those two companies and you'll see some good ideas.

Wow haha.. Looked up Sholdt they have a ring with a striking resemblance to what I have created I'm going to redo some the lines and edges and make it a little more feminine less like an eye haha. Something similar to this with the single support and split half bezel supports on top. We just looked at some designs together and she likes the solitare without the accents.

Awesome I'm glad to see that my taste isn't absolutely skewed. Im going to make some revisions and perhaps update the thread in the next 72 hours..

I agree it's eye-ish. Another designer with similar, more feminine styles is on Etsy - Nodeform. I have long admired their pieces but have not ordered yet.

These designs look like some at a local designer up here in Seattle Green Lake Jewelers who I was gonna have cast my design. Thank You everyone for your replies and advice it has been much appreciated!

I love sleek modern and bezels so this is close to my tastes but not quite as for me its a little clunky (imho) My worry is the amount of metal in your details verses the stone. I was guess that that setting would swamp a 3/4 diamond and make it look smaller than it actually is.

Does she have any custom jewelry that she wears that you could show us? Would help to get a sense of her style.

Diamonds are also very hard and whilst its not impossible to damage one its less easy than you'd expect (with well cut MRBs) and if you trawl thru PS you'd only find a handful of stories about damaged stones. Going for a bezel will give your stone extra protection but I don't think you'll need to worry too much.

Thanks, sleek and modern is what I was going for and being that it is a 3d render the shank and extra material can be reduced by the jeweler to her liking as metal can easily be taken away but not added haha . So I tricked her last night and gave her a bunch of rings to look at and she liked designs similar to mine so I sneakily made a high resolution render of my design and incorporated it into the others and this design was among which she favored which is awesome. Regardless im going to fillet some of the edges further to reduce the hard lines and work the shank angles to look less like an eye.

She doesn't wear jewelry, her ears haven't been pierced since she was little, and she finds most jewelry serving little to no practical function so she doesn't wear anything. So having no refined taste makes my job a little more difficult hense why I went with a methodical practical design that also radiates a modern look.

I'm going to go against the grain and say I really like your design. And I'm a traditionalist! For a geologist I think it's really cool. And very unique!

I think with the changes you are making to make it a bit more fluid it'll be perfect.
