Take me off the list - my boyfriend (fiancee now, I suppose
) asked me to spend forever with him last Tuesday!
It was our first full day in Hawaii, and we had set out on a hike along the Na Pali Coast at about 8 in the morning. We hiked the first 2 miles of the Kalalau trail to Hanakapiai Beach, then 2 miles inland to the Hanakapiai Falls. The hike was incredible - challenging but amazingly rewarding (in more ways than one!) We only saw one other person on the trail on the way to the beach, and there were only a handful of people at the falls. The trail winds through the cliffs that line the coast, giving you some of the most breathtaking views imaginable as you climb and descend about 1200 feet in the first 2 miles, and then follows a "stream" into the valley through jungle, climbing another 800 or so feet and crossing the stream several times, until you reach the valley's back wall: a stunning 1000+ foot waterfall, of which you can see the lowest 400 feet or so. The falls plunge into a freezing cold pool that you can swim in: a welcome break after the hike!
Here are a couple pictures I took from the hike:

(this picture is taken from about an eighth-mile away from the falls, we actually hiked up right to the pool at the bottom of it)
Anyway, we reached the falls and were both in awe. I was busy taking a few pictures, and turned around to tell my BF I was concerned that we didn't bring enough water (for the record, we did not...). I got about 1/2 that sentence out of my mouth when I realized he was down on one knee. He said "Melissa..." and at first I didn't know if he was for real or if this was a "fake out" - he had teased me before our trip, saying he might pretend to tie his shoe and pick things up off the ground, etc, to keep me guessing (I knew the proposal was coming, afterall!)... Then I saw the ring in his hand. He said something along the lines of "will you marry me," and I got down on the ground too and held him tight. We hugged, kissed, took a few pictures, I said yes at some point, then he told me how the last year has been the happiest of his life because of me, and how I make him want to be a better man. I said some sweet things too, and we celebrated with a dip in the take-your-breath-away cold pool under the waterfall, then hiked the 4 miles back to the trailhead, stopping for a swim at the Hanakapiai Beach, and also at Ke'e beach (where the trail starts). We headed back to town, had a few mai tais, showered, dressed up nice, and went out for a fancy fish dinner. Best day of my life. So far... Best. Vacation. Ever.
I'll upload some ring pics in a minute!
