Emerald vs baguette eternity ring?

Hi! Could use some help—

Is there a visual difference between small sized emerald cut vs baguette? Like in a size around .8 or .10 (3mm x 2mm)?

I’m thinking about having an East-West eternity or 3/4 eternity ring made but I’m not sure if I should be asking vendors about baguettes vs emerald cut.

Any thoughts are appreciated! And though I have looked through all the threads I could find with baguette or emerald bands, pictures are always lovely if you have one to share. Thanks in advance!

(Also—to save time—though I’m not sure about full eternity vs 3/4 eternity I have already read through all the awesome info here on the general pros and cons — appreciate everyone for posting so much info about that in the past!)

I think so, there’d be a visual difference yes.
but we are here for the tiny details.
(To the random casual observer of what you wear, no I don’t think they’d notice)

also think the style of setting will add or detract from the visual difference between the two.

You need to look at some baguette stones vs some emerald cut stones and see what cut appeals to you.
There will be a slightly different look but at that size not sure it would be obvious to anyone but you.

So far I’ve only seen the smaller baguette stones in person. I’ve seen emerald cut solitaires (in like 1 ct) in person but not smaller emerald cut stones and not in an East-West (or even regular) eternity. Otherwise it’s just been looking at pictures online—some of which it’s very clear that it’s an emerald cut or baguette band, and others, not so much.

As far as the setting goes, any recommendations on what would be good for this sort of thing if you want something that sits low and close to your finger?

I think the only really appreciable difference is that some baguette cuts will have slightly longer length. The difference would be pretty hard to discern. I notice that both are being shown interchangeably on many sites.

Thank you--yes, I think that is also what is also causing some confusion on my end.

I went and looked at some stores in person today following @tyty333 's advice.

Here is what I gathered in case this helps someone else later:

A few places told me that baguettes are just the smaller version of emerald cut stones. (From what I've learned reading and looking here and elsewhere, it would probably be more accurate to explain this as baguettes stones are available down to smaller sizes than emerald cut stones, and that what they have in common is both being step cut.) Feel free to correct me if I haven't gotten this right!

One person, in what seemed to be a better store, explained the cut more and also said emeralds are cut deeper and he prefers the look of them as a result. (I think the look difference he is talking about is a little more obvious when comparing skinner baguettes with the emerald cut stones.) That last person also said he can get the prongs to more disappear into the look of the ring since the emerald cuts have the clipped corners. So I'm leaning that way now.

The thing I found most amazing is how different all the rings looked, even when people told me that I was looking at similar size stones (like just comparing one ring with .10 stones to another). There seems to be a lot of variation among the length to width ratio even in small sized stones! It seems like the baguettes in some cases could end up being especially skinny (long and rectangular). But even just only looking at emerald cut stones, that made a big difference from ring to ring and there was still a fair amount of variation seemingly.

Having tried more stuff on, I'm heavily leaning toward a 3/4 eternity. (I decided I like the feel of it better after having put some rings on though I still think the full eternity is really beautiful!) I also was surprised to find that two settings that may have looked bigger or clunkier to me in pictures online seemed less so when trying them on.

Anyway, I hope all this helps some future ring buyer. And if I follow through with this (if I can get the budget portion to work out!) I will post follow up pictures.

And if you still feel like posting, I'm still looking at setting ideas, for a ring that hugs my finger closely (ie. is low set). I'm going to page through some of the other posts on settings and eternity rings now.
