i''m getting an Ering custom designed by WF and originally wanted our birthstones (sapphire and emerald) mounted INSIDE the shank near the bottom (so it would be touching the finger). We''ve started the CAD process but now Joe said the production manager said that emeralds are too fragile to be mounted inside the shank.

1) Has anyone had an emerald mounted inside the shank in anyway? Just curious, i trust WF but just wondering if there are different ways or ideas on how to mount it.

2) Does anyone have any other ideas of how to incorporate birthstones in the design w/o making them a major feature?? since they are different colors its also a symmetric/balance issue

=(

Any chance we can see the CAD b4 we make a suggestion?

If not, I would say try the surprise stone approach?

well the emerald/sapphire were''nt shown in the original CAD b/c they forgot to put it in. but if you just want to get an idea of the setting style do a search for ''denverboy'' and you''ll see my thread saying "review my WF cad imgs" =) actually stone cold i think you suggested making the bezel set melee in my design the birthstones, but the main reasons I didnt want to was b/c i kind of want it to be clean and just white diamonds seen in the main setting, and also i didnt like the unbalanced feel of one color facing one way and antoher facing the other (not to mention that one would be covered up by the wedding band).

so if there are no other ways to mount an emerald on the inside of the band, maybe i''m just outta luck hmm

Oh, ya, now I remember... :P

How about on the wedding ring? is that just a plain ring?

wedding band will have melee on the top too. well basically i''ve decided i either want it inside the band or not at all so i guess i''m just out of luck unless someone knows if there are different ways to mount it inside the shank =/ i''m guessing there''s just one way though since you can''t have prongs. i had asked for it to sit flush w/ the band just FYI in case that makes a diff.

just mount her stone in the shank then? It is only your birth stone that is too fragile right?

Not sure if this is workable. Here goes.

How about mounting in on the bottom of the wedding ring, channel style, and the bottom of the channel is through the shank. The stones are protected and still can be view top side through the channel bottom? Maybe a stupid idea...

Use a tsavorite or spinel instead of an emerald, it''s still green

didn''t Cehrabera have a ruby set this way?

I'm sure WF would do it for you if you release them from liability for possible damage to the stone when setting...

Or could you do other significant stones? Someone else mentioned this, but Tsavorite garnet is the same color, but I assume the birthstone matters.

Is there anyway it could be set upside down underneath the gallery with table of emerald facing inside of ring (top of the ring where the main stone is) or underneath the halo, assuming it is a small emerald? Therefore it would not be where the shank is taking the wear.

hmm some good ideas there - the Tsavorite garnet is tempting and probably the idea I liked best, but then I couldnt really say "its our birthstones" =/

and I thought about asking WF to try it anyway but I guess if they try it and it breaks (even if they try it a couple of times), then theres a hole in the shank they''d have to fill up and thats more work = more $$.

by the way, the rubies in the photo above are on the outter surface of the shank, I was planning on the inner - not sure if there is a difference there. But rubies are probably also stronger than emeralds?? not sure, but it works fine for harder stones i guess.

So I think I''ll probably just end up forgetting about it, or there''s a small chance I''d go with the Tsavorite garnet thing but probably not likely.

Anywho, thanks for all the creative ideas everyone!! =D

personally i think that the colored stones is not a great idea...........how about eachothers birthdates engraved inside the ring. we engraved the date we actally first met

Hey Denverboy,

My sister had a baby in May - so her husband got her an emerald ring! Nice, right? Well, my sister went to the jewelry store to have it sized and they told her NOT to wear it everyday (her other baby is July - and she has a ruby ring that she wears everyday and she wanted to do the same with this one.)

She asked why and they said emeralds are a lot more fragile than rubies. Basically, diamonds are hardest on the Moh''s scale at 10, rubies and sapphires (which are the same thing, corundum, basically, but different trace minerals yield different colors) are next at 9, and then emeralds are down around 7.5.

I would maybe save your money and on your one year anniversary you could get your wife something with emerald in it, to be worn on special occasions or out to dinner, but not everyday.

Good luck!

Being someone who cracked a beautiful emerald mounted in a ring, I get so nervous of this stone! What about having a very small emerald cabochon mounted inside the band instead of a faceted one?
I know that it is still a soft stone, but may be possible to really embed it??? just a thought ...

late to this but i saw it mentioned in your other thread. i don''t know if it is possible to get an emerald cut sapphire small enough or if it must be round to set in this fashion. i was just thinking that an emerald cut sapphire could maybe be considered as a symbol of both?
