Should I be concerned about about F/G color ECs in a yellow gold shank and bezel?

Will the ECs reflect too much yellow? I''m having difficulties finding examples of bezel set ECs in yellow gold.

Hi, Joe,
I think the color of the EC's is such that you could set them in either white or yellow metal. Yellow gold is not as popular right now, so that's why you may be having trouble finding pictures. Check out these vendors; they tend to have more bezel styles and a good selection in both white and yellow gold.

Personally, as an EC owner (and one who has had step-cuts in a range of colors) I would say it ALL depends on the color. If the EC is H or lower in color, I personally think you should not bezel set it (this is JUST ME!). It (once again, personal opinion) makes it seems warmer....however, if you have a higher color diamond, I would think a yellow gold bezel is no problem and would be very unique.

HI Joe,
Although a well made bezel can be gorgeous, there are inherent sacrifices one makes when choosing a bezel.
It covers far more of the stone that prongs would.
If you set F-G color emerald cuts in yellow bezels, it''s possible they may look more like H-I colored stones.

How large are the emerald cuts, and how many stones are we talking about?

David (first, love your jewelry!). I cannot agree more, I actually think that it is hard to put an emerald cut in a yellow bezel...because even if it is an "I", won''t the yellow bezel just make it look more...yellow?!

Awwww- Thanks UCLABelle!

You have a very good point.
Personally I do not feel that step cuts have an inherent tendency to show color- although many people do feel that way here on PS.

Regardless, your point is well taken- even if an I color looks fairly colorless- setting it in a yellow bezel will likely make it look a lot more yellow.

I was searching for a photo of a high white emerald cut that we''d set into a yellow gold bezel- but I don''t think we''ve done that for exactly the reasons we''re discussing here.

The stone in the photo was an I color set into a white gold bezel.
I think that this is a case where I can see the color in the I colored emerald cut- and I do believe the bezel is accentuating that.

a yellow bezel will make it more yellow particularly when its tilted and a VF shows leakage.

I can''t quite tell whether the [partial] bezel is white or yellow in this photo from Harry Winston but the shank is clearly yellow [with yellow diamond pave as far as I can tell]. I think the ring looks pretty cool:

Here is an EC with red to make it easier to see.

Hello David and UCLABelle,

Thanks for the input!

I have 3 stones on hold. One is a .78 carat (5.6 x 4.8) F VS, and two ~.5 carat (4.8 x 4.1) F/G VS stones.

My biggest concern is what you''re bringing up. Will F/G colored stones look tinted by the yellow gold? Also, where there is leakage through the ECs, will the yellow show through and contribute to the yellow tint.

Is the recommendation from the group that setting higher colors in a yellow gold bezel is NOT the way to go?

You can see the effect in this HW picture...
y-gold shank is no problem but a gold bezel I would say no.

Thanks Storm again

It really wouldn''t make sense to pay for F/G color if the end effect wasn''t a white stone.

I''m having WF take some images of the stones with YG behind and around them.

you could have a WG liner put in the bezel that has been done.
ie: bezel is y-gold on the outside and w-gold on the inside.
But it would be extra $$$$

Have them if they will take them strait on and at about a 15 degree tilt from the table.

What about a platinum bezeled insert into the yellow gold, that way all the material surrounding the stone is white?
