Okay so I have been learning more and more every day about the emerald cut and what to look for in a stone. My delima is that I really want quality but after spending the day last weekend looking at rings etc with the Girlfriend, I think she is more interested in size than anything.

So do I go with a lower quality stone over size or not. Here are my thoughts on the subject maybe someone can help me go one way or another.

For the Emerald Cut diamond I dont want to go below an H Color since it is going to be mounted on White gold. I also dont want to go below a VS2 because you can see inclusions so easy in the EC. The GF likes stones that are of a ratio of 1.3-1.5 from what i can tell when i showed her rings. I really am only going to even consider stones that are certified by GIA, AGS, or maybe EGL.

I have found some Ideal cut .69 E / VS1 / 64% Depth / 66% Table stones for around $2200
Then I found a couple stones that are larger. What do you think of these? Would it be worth the money to go over budget a few hundred dollars for the larger but lesser quality stone?

My total budget on the ring is about $3600. I found a setting that she liked for $1200 but the store''s diamond prices are outrageous. I will probably have to pay a couple hundred to have a stone mounted but I am not sure.

Tks for posting this question. It is the very question I need answered too.

PS. be thankful your in the US, prices here in Canada are mental and selection is aweful. Where I am at any way.

You need to personally look at these diamonds to be sure you like their light behavior and visual appearance. While parameters are very useful, I don't recommend buying blind. It is worth the postage to see a diamond or two before you commit to a particular stone.

In emerald cut, the person who wants such a stone does not generally want the brilliancy or sparkle of a round diamond, but you must be sure there is no strange look or watery character to the stone of you buy.

At least a picture, something! There is no way to decide based on those numbers: at least I cannot picture the stones based on them. If you do order one of them and look at it the next question is “what to look for “ I guess.

It would be nice to have the seller of these line up pictures, and Iscope photos would not hurt either.

In the meantime, there is one stone with better descriptions that you may find interesting: 0.9ct F/VS1

There isn’t a hoard of EC at the usual shops suspect of better presentations. However, asking any such seller to provide a small lineup of diamonds with appropriate descriptions does not sound outrageous to me. If that works with a local store, why not virtually ? And I would definitely ask for VS1-SI1. There are good chances to find clean pieces in the whole range, and it would be a shame to give up choice, IMO.

Good find. I agree that it is pretty hard to base a decision solely on the specs. I was going to buy from one of the big online places but I just cant pull the trigger without seeing the stones. I did find one place that seems to have decent prices and they are local to me (Oregon) I am going to try and have them order the 3 stones originally posted and then i can go view them. I am not sure if they will do that or not but I will have to ask.

Old Miner,
Can you explain what you mean by strange look or "watery" character? I've heard this terminology thrown around a few times but don't know what they mean.
