Hello all,

I am looking to buy an emerald cut diamond for an engagement ring. I have been an avid reader the last several weeks and have learned a lot about what to look for in a diamond and what specs I should look for. I have searched on jamesallen and engagement rings direct trying to find the best diamond I can get. My price range is $5000-$8500 and am looking for a L/W ratio around 1.3-1.5. I have seen several diamonds that fit my budget and look great on the computer. I know I need to get an ASET done to see which diamonds stand out from the others. My question is if the following diamonds I am looking at are good candidates to receive an ASET? If not, are there better alternatives out there? I also have read people suggesting to look on other sites. Do these sites also offer ASET images?

Here are a couple I have been looking into.

I have requested an image of this diamond.

Hi Blue,
I cant speak about any vendor, or their diamonds- rather general discussion......
Are you experienced in correlating ASET images to how a diamond looks in real life?
The reason I've asked is that you are taking as a given that you need aset to make up your mind
That might not be the case with an emerald cut, and based on your own experience.

Thanks for the reply rock,

I am relatively new to this so I do not have really any experience with correlating the images to what the stones look like in real life. I have seen several diamonds at local jewelry stores but felt like I could get a better deal by shopping online. I have read that ASETs are more helpful when looking at the facets of the diamond and to see how a diamond will shine. But other than reading posts and articles on this and other websites, I have very little experience with these diamonds.

It's true that ASET does give useful information about where a diamond is gathering light from.
However, "shine" is not a scientific calibration.
So, if a diamond appeals to one person, based on the way it shines, it might not appeal to the next person.

If you narrow down your top three, James Allen can have their gemologist give them opinion on what they look like in real life. That will help you determine which one to order - and you have an awesome refund policy if you don't like it in person.

It's true that as an average, diamonds are less expensive online than in jewelry stores.
But my advice is not to place price above other factors without consideration.

All the stuff about the ASET etc- my point is that it's very important for you to pick what you love- and she loves.
So look at a bunch in person if you can.
Is this a surprise?

None of these are great. They aren't terrible though either. But I think you can do better than these with your budget.
You can work with JA. But since you are already talking to ERD, I would just give Mark a call and ask for him to find you a nice stone around or under 7k. G or better in color. Eyeclean completely. Best and brightest EC possible. He has a great eye and can weed through all the EC's out there for you, and will do so, and will find you a couple top contenders then provide you with an ASET and an opinion of each.

That's what I would do if it were me. I can and am fully capable of finding a great EC, and even own an ASET. But if I were looking for one, despite all that, I'd call a trusted vendor like Mark and just have him search for me and then propose back the best of what he finds.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I will definitely talk with Mark and see what he comes up with. In the mean while I will continue to check with local places to see if there are any diamonds that catch me eye. I will you keep you all posted. Thanks again for the help and information! I really appreciate it
