Hi all,

My boyfriend and I recently went to Tiffany's to try on some engagement rings. I like emerald cuts, and we've noticed that not a lot of stores carry this cut or have them in-stock for customers to try on (we're in Toronto). So far, Tiffany's seems to be the only store that's most accessible in terms of having the most selection of emerald cut engagement rings and they're always happy to let you try on different ones. We're looking for a stone that's around 0.8 - 1-carat, and I didn't see one I like that day in that range. The sales person then checked in the system, and found the following rings for me from other stores.

Although, I don't think we'd be purchasing the ring from Tiffany's, but from a educational standpoint, which of the following would be a better stone? And why?

A:
$11,900 CAD
Carat- 0.90
G Color VVS1 Clarity
Fluorescense - none
Cut - Excellent
Symmetry - Very Good
Polish- Very Good
Depth- 65.9%
Table- 68%
Girdle- Medium to Slightly thick

B:
$10,900 CAD
Carat-0.79
F Color VVS2 Clarity
Fluorescense - none
Cut - Excellent
Symmetry - Very Good
Polish- Very Good
Depth- 68.7%
Table- 66%
Girdle- Medium to Slightly thick

Thank you for your time in advance!

You really won't be able to discern anything from those specs. First thing to do is determine what l/w ratio you like. I've seen some jewelers proclaim that a 1.5 is the ideal ratio but I find it to be too skinny and prefer something under 1.4.

There's no ideal cut specs AFAIK so you really need to view individual stones to see what characteristics they have. Some have dead spots whereby they exhibit a lot of black at certain angles but you can't really tell that from the specs.

Thank you for the replies. I do like it elongated ~1.4
