I'm new to this forum and I wanted to get some specific advice on how to think through this diamond.

It has a GSL certificate from Sydney Australia (putting aside grading differences for a minute) - if this were the equivalent GIA grades is this a solid stone for circa $8500-9000USD?

What should I look for?

Cut: Emerald
Carat: 1.54ct
Dimensions: 8.56 x 5.81 x 3.55mm
Colour: H
Clarity: VS2

Proportion
Total Depth: 61.1%
Table Spread: 66.3% (I don't even know what this means)
Crown Height: 10.2% (Not sure how this relates to GIA measurements)
Pavilion Depth: 48.9% (As above)
Girdle Thickness: 0.3% (What would this be in GIA?)

Finish
Polish: Good
Symmetry: Good
Culet: Small

Fluorescence: Nil

One cannot evaluate ECs without, ideally, good quality pictures, a good quality video, and an ASETscope image.

One also can't put aside grading differences between GIA/AGS and other grading organisations - it is very likely that the 'H' stone in question would actually be an I or a J at GIA or AGS, so you cannot directly compare prices between the same grading letters by the different organisations.

Can you evaluate the stone in a setting or would you need to pull it out?

It is easier to evaluate stones outside of a setting, but one can use an ASET on set stones, I believe.

If you post up the order of your priorities for Clarity, Colour and Carat (size), we can help find you alternative options that are likely to be more reliably graded and have better assessment information (pics, videos, ASETs).

Is the stone for yourself or someone else?

If the latter, is it to be an engagement ring?

If it is to be an engagement ring, have you and the intended recipient looked at rings and stones and discussed what they like (in terms of size/colour/clarity/ring style/new or secondhand/etc.)?

Ditto. Can't tell you much without pictures..

GSL (Gem Studies Laboratory) is the lab endorsed by Australia’s equivalent of GIA, the Gemmological Association of Australia. They have nothing to do with other labs abbreviated GSL (and I believe there is one based in NYC and Toronto that is username by a lot of mall brands for grading).

More info on them can be found here on the GAA website:
http://www.gem.org.au/about_gaa/gem_studies_laboratory_gsl/

As such, I would have a lot more confidence in their grading standards compared with other Aussie labs (e.g. ADGL or even the more well known Aussie lab/diamond exchange, DCLA).

OP, if I were you, I’d do a search on James Allen for EC stones with equivalent GIA grades (colour, clarity, polish and symmetry) and see how much they are. That would be the easiest way to compare.
