I just received the ASET images I requested on three emerald cut stones. I guess I shouldn't have an opinion because I've never looked at one before, so I'll just shut up and ask for everyone's thoughts. I'm not sure if you need to see the stats to interpret them? If so please let me know.

Thanks!!

I'd pick between 1 and 3...

I hope Chrono and KarlK see these. And Julie. They are the resident step cut ASET interpreters.
I am not an expert but do have an EC and I would choose #1. I recently bought and returned an EC which had an ASET very similar to your #2. It didn't light up and had primarily green in the center. What did the gemoligist say about each diamond?

The first one is the E.

Is the second one the I and the third one the G?

Sorry, it took me a bit to sort out which one is which.

Here is what the gemologist said (same order as the images are above) and the links to the stones on JA.

#1 - 36014 has good light performance, but it is just not as strong as the other two. It is eye clean and faces up a bright icy white color.

#2 - 30563 has more sparkle than the other two due to the wide corners. The overall light performance of the diamond is very balanced throughout the diamond with a good amount of sparkle. It too faces up eye clean and is a nice white color. It has a more short, but wide shape to it.

#3 - 30482 a very nice and well balanced brilliance and sparkle. It is completely eye clean, faces up a nice white color and has a longer more slender shape to it.

I just viewed the video's and I would pick #3. I had that one saved before and liked it.

3 looks the best.

#3; it looks well balanced and I suspect there are areas where the green will tilt into red.

I guess I'm asking not just which of these three pictures is best, but whether any of them seem worth buying. I haven't been able to figure out what is normal for emerald cuts from looking at old posts, but I was expecting more red. Do these look normal/good/bad?

From the information I had when I requested the ASETs I was really, really liking the one that is now #2 because it would look bigger and I thought it looked really sparkly in the video.

Also, both G's are $8100, which is the absolute top of our budget and actually slightly over, even if there is a discount. So do either of those seem like they would be like "omg wow!", which is what I would need if I'm going to go over.

Oops I meant #3. I liked #3 before getting the images. Lazy thumbs and an iPhone :)

You can keep looking for ECs with redder ASET but how much longer are you willing to wait and look? There is no guarantee that it will be within the next 3 months. JA has a generous return policy and your best best is to view the stone in person. I think this one should be a keeper.

#3 all the way.

Is it $8,100 after the PS discount?

Yes $8100 is the best price. They are only offering a 0.85% discount, which takes it from just over $8100 to just under $8100. That does change things, I was looking at slightly more expensive stones thinking the discount would be closer to 5%.

I'm not sure what to do. We are supposed to look at more stones at a B&M on Saturday but they don't provide us with any of the technical information, they just put stuff in front of us like "look, isn't it sparkly?" I do want to buy the setting and wedding bands there because they have great pricing on those and great customer service, so we told them what we were looking at online and gave them the opportunity to try to show us something similar.

I'm stuck. Any advice?

Hardly a 1% discount which is low; I wonder why you aren't getting the 5% discount. Is it because you elected not to wire transfer the payment?

The wire transfer doesn't effect the discount. It varies by item I think. I just bought mine and I only got I think about a 3.3% without wire transfer, if I had gone wore transfer I'd have gotten 4.4%

Yeah we haven't discussed payment method at all. I just asked if there was a PS discount and they guy gave me the prices (not the percentages.) I guess I should ask about the discount. I will report back.

I was also going to ask why the GIA report says VVS2 but on the JA site it is listed as VS1. Hopefully it's not the wrong report!

Ok the guy said: "In regards to the discount, I have been hearing a lot lately that we offer a 5% discount. Our Pricescope discount ranges from 1-5%, depending on the diamond. There is no set discount percentage for our diamonds."

That doesn't really answer the question of how they decide. But then he rearranged some codes in the computer and it came down to about a 2% discount. That will actually work for me, since that puts me $13 under my absolute maximum upper limit!

I also have to decide if I want one of their settings. I don't think I do. The closest they have to what I'm looking for is this one: http://www.jamesallen.com/#!/engagement-rings/vintage/platinum-antique-bezel-and-pave-set-engagement-ring-item-148

But I don't like the way the bezels are raised and some of the other details. I was looking at more like: http://www.brilliantearth.com/Tiara-Diamond-Ring-Platinum-BE150BD12R8-493/

Or I am completely in love with this one: http://www.wherethediamondsare.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=app.product&pid=12263&cyo=0
I love love love that it has the little bitty squares. It's all spiky and awesome! That's the one I'm really leaning towards. I also like the idea of having it set locally so I have somewhere physical to go if something goes wrong. Everyone in the store has also been insanely nice to us.

Now I'm kind of excited! How long will JA normally hold a stone for? I need to sit down with SO and have a last little visit with the checkbook before we kiss all our money goodbye. I think they still have all three on hold and I would like to tell them they can release the other two, but I'm afraid that will make them remember that they should have taken the hold off of all three of them 24 hours ago or something.

JA is really nice. Just call them and explain that you are still making your decision and need more time. I've held diamonds for like 4 days before.

I think the suppliers of the diamonds (not JA since they don't hold most of the inventory on their site) determines the discount on the diamond, so that's why they vary from stone to stone.

I agree tell them you know if your buying one you want that one so they can release the other 2, and ask for 24 hours to get your finances sorted.

See if they can't make that ring where it is all level. The round parts being higher is so weird.

I just released my hold on 30482 (#3) so if anyone wants to jump on that, go for it. JA verified that it is a VVS2, as it says on the GIA report, not VS1 as it said in the description.

My SO ended up being really uncomfortable buying online, after all this time and research, ugh. But we got our B&M store to bring in something with nearly identical stats, just .1 smaller, so that is what we went with. He was also nervous that we could potentially not like the JA stone in person and then lose out on the B&M stone as well while we waited and be back to square one. We are both beyond sick of looking, so it sort of makes sense. Obviously he was the one pushing for it, but I'm sure once I see it set I'll probably love it.

Thank you SO MUCH for all the help and hand holding! If nothing else, I at least feel like I know exactly what we paid for and why. Before PS I thought I wanted a higher color, which would have resulted in a much smaller stone. I'll come back with pictures once it comes in!!
