Hello,

I’m brand new to the forum with a special interest in learning to interpret ASET Scopes, especially as they pertain to emerald cut diamonds. I have posted a side by side comparison of two diamond ASET’S and would appreciate any opinions as to the best ASET of the two. Don’t laugh at the pics! They were taken using a simple digital camera shot directly through the ASETscope. I thought they turned out better than expected for an amateur’s first attempt.

Anyway, the vital statistics on the stones are, according to GIA grading:

#1- Stone on the Left
.95 Carat
H Color
VS2 Clarity
Table- 69%
Depth- 60.7%
7.11 x 4.87 x 2.96mm

#2- Stone on the Right
1.01 Carat
F Color
SI1 Clarity
Table- 66%
Depth- 67.1%
6.94 x 4.88 x 3.28mm

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks so much,

Keith

So what's the end game here?

1. To pick one of these to purchase? So I can tell you which one I'd pick and why?
or
2. Learning exercise just to understand what's being shown?

Also, tell me which stone if which? Is the one of the left the 1st stone and the one on the right the 2nd stone?

Hi Gypsy,

Thanks for your reply. The object is both. I'l buy one of these but also want to learn about the ASETS, especially with regard to emerald cuts. The Stone on the left is #1, the stone on the right is #2. Right now I'd just like to hear opinions on the ASETS themselves please.

Best,

Keith

Not an expert but the stone on the right looks like it has a step that is much larger than the others. I prefer
Steps that are someone similar in size. Both the assets look pretty decent to me for an emerald (again, not
an expert) . I prefer the faceting pattern of the stone on the left.

From my limited knowledge so far, I was surprised to see more blue color in the stone on the right. It is the deeper cut. I would have expected the more shallow stone on the left to show the most blue?

I think they are both lovely stones.

Stone 1.
You were able to keep this one relatively still in first two shots. And shot three is slightly tilted. And in all three it shows very nice performance.
It is most likely eyeclean.
But with a shallow depth and large table it’s not going to have much if any crown height, so it’s not going to have a lot of fire.I think you’ll see a lot of brightness, but not a lot of light play and scintillation. Which is FINE, that’s an observation not a judgment. It’s going to be the more constantly bright, but more quiet of the two. I also think that since it has more edge to edge brightness it is going to look slightly larger than the other in some light.

Stone 2.
This one is different in all three pics. And one it’s showing a lot of brightness in the center with all those facets under the table “on”. In three, there are a couple facets turned ‘off’ (blue facets). Shot Two is in the middle. It’s showing the brightness of one, but also hits at the ‘off facets’ of three to come. In all of them there isn’t as much edge to edge brightness as there is with the first stone, so it might look slightly smaller than the other in spite of very similar dimensions.
Is it eyeclean?
It has much more classic EC proportions in terms of table and depth. And I think, if the crown height is high enough (there is potential there but ultimately it depends on the actually cutting) it will potential have more fire than the other one. It’s going to be a slightly more ‘moody’ stone, lively at times, slightly sullen at others, and vacillating between that when in movement and playing with the light.

Does that match what you see with your eyes when you watch them, and see them perform?

Yes, they are both eye clean. You are quite correct in saying that the stone on the right does seem more lively some of the time, and it seems to "catch" more light when tilted or viewed from the sides. It also does have a slightly smaller look to it when compared to the other stone (Stone #1). They are both lovely stones, but for some reason, stone #2 does seem to have more personality to me. That's what is so interesting about these emrald cuts! Unfortunately, there is no measurement of the crown heights on the GIA evaluations. I'd love to see that change.

As for which I'd pick. Since you have them in person. I'd wear one for an hour. Then the other. Then see which one captures your attention and keeps it more. I don't think either stone is a dog, so it really depends on which one 'speaks' to you more.
