Hi everyone. I am very new to diamonds and have tried to read up as much as possible, but I need some experienced advice. Does anyone think either of the following are a good pick as far as emerald cuts go? Which is better? I hear emeralds can be very tricky to pick and I just don''t know enough yet. Thanks in advance!!!!

Stock number: LD00141381
Carat weight: 1.12

Length/width ratio: 1.30

Stock number: LD00426551
Carat weight: 1.07

Depth %: 64.4%
Table %: 67%
Symmetry: Very good
Polish: Very good
Girdle: Medium
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 7.20x4.91x3.16 mm
Length/width ratio: 1.47

Thanks!!!

For a beginner, these are two good potentials...some things to consider...

EC#1: The depth may be a bit high.

EC#2: The depth is smaller than the table. Usually you want the opposite.

However, have you actually seen the diamonds?? Honestly with fancy cuts there are a lot of guidelines, but no hard and fast rules. The numbers on the diamond can get you in the ballpark of a nice diamond, but you really have to see the diamond to determine if it''s what you want.

The ratios are different. EC#2 is more long and thin while #1 is more fat and wider...this is entirely personal preference...I tend to like ECs that are within a 1.4 to 1.5 ratio.

Good luck!!

Thanks for the reply. I guess my next question is at what point does the depth start to effect the light return? I know too much depth means you''re paying for diamond that you don''t see, but does it effect the sparkle?

And unfortunately, no, I haven''t seen these diamonds in person as they are on Blue Nile.

I found this one this morning, but again the depth is 69.4%.

Stock number: LD00139711
Carat weight: 1.15
Cut: Very Good
Color: H
Clarity: VVS2
Depth %: 69.4%
Table %: 62%
Symmetry: Very good
Polish: Very good
Girdle: Medium
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 7.28x5.03x3.49 mm
Length/width ratio: 1.45

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it!

Is this one better?

Wire Transfer Price: $5238
Length to Width Ratio: 1.32
Measurements: 6.87-5.2-3.27
Depth Percentage: 62.9 %
Table Percentage: 61 %
Girdle: MD
Culet: None (Pointed)
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence: None (Inert)

The first two diamonds have potential. At this point, given all the information that you have, your guess is as good as mine. Info on crown height (or a Sarin) would help even more. A crown height of 10% and upwards will mean the diamond will give off more fire (coloured light). However, I don''t think Blue Nile has this information, but I could be wrong. I would not buy a vvs unless all the diamond is too beautiful or perfect to pass up and the last one you listed isn''t. The next step is to view these ECs in person.

Delicious!

Those numbers spell a very promising EC. All it needs is someone to actually look at the EC and confirm that it is really a beauty or not.

I agree with Chrono!! I would still want to see the diamond in person, but the numbers look VERY promising!!!

Great! Thanks for your replies!!!!!!

I agree, I too would like to see the stone in person....only catch is that the stone is in Atlanta and I am in Boston. Anyone have any suggestions on options for seeing it?

Thanks!

Some companies will send a diamond directly to an appraiser for you to view. The cost is on you, but if you purchase the diamond they will incorporate the cost of the shipping/insurance to do this into the price of the stone...You can also ask the jeweler to send you pictures of the diamond itself, IdealScope and Sarin reports to get a better idea of what you may be purchasing...

I''d find a reputable appraiser in your area and have them look at the stone...also, does your dealer have a return policy? Most have 10+ days. That would give you enough time to get the stone, take it to an appraiser and determine if the stone is good...if not, return it...

Good luck!

Yes, the dealer has a 30 day return policy and is highly recommended on these boards. The catch is that I am having the setting custom made there also, so that makes a return more complicated.

Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it!

If it''s reputable dealer, then I''d call them directly and let them know your concerns. Ask them what they recommend as you would like to see the diamond prior to any mounting. I''m sure if they are a reputable dealer, they will be happy to work with you..

thanks

OK, I got a copy of the sarin report, here are the details:

depth 63.4%
crown angle 38.9
Crown height 12.5%
Pavil angle 53.5
Pavil depth 47.7%
Table size 61.7%
Girdle thinkness 3.2%
l/w 1.32

What do you think?

Thanks!

Looks like you''ve got a winner!! I would want to see it first before making the final decision...

Hi, I just peeked in here ''cuz I love ECs and need to learn.

But I think you are speaking of Union Diamond here in my town of Atlanta... and if so, I would trust Jeff to pick out a winner for you. We just bought an upgrade RB with Jeff''s help and are very pleased with Union. You have a great 30-day return policy just in case, but I think Jeff will steer you in the right direction.

HTH! Good luck!

It sounds like a drop dead gorgeous stone. Congratulations on a wonderful find! Are you having an independent appraisor affirm the stats, appraise and give his opinion on the beauty of this sparkler?

Well, I bought the diamond and it is beautiful. I also bought a custom setting and that is where the problems arose. The jeweler assured me that the setting would come out "exactly" as the picture that I sent him....but it is significantly different. There are also two very visible scratches in the platinum. I contacted the jeweler multiple times since, but have received no reply. I really like the diamond and the setting, but I am definitely not happy about being ignored. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

bostonr1...just be persistent and contact them via phone contact, not email...also remember that it''s a holiday weekend and this could be impacting their ability to return your emails. If they don''t reply then you may need to follow up with the Better Business Bureau, but see if they contact you after this weekend...

Would LOVE to see pictures though!!!

Eek! If you''re having probs with the vendor I stepped in to recommend I apologize!
I agree that the holiday weekend may be part of the communication problem. Are youtrying to telephone them or rely on email (I''d def. stick to the phone calls).

I''m glad the diamond is great.

Would it be possible to post pics of your original setting idea vs the actual custom setting received? Maybe some of the jewelers here could weigh in as to what mistakes were made.

Don''t get me wrong, the ring I received is very beautiful and aside from the scratches I like it a lot. I am mainly just annoyed that it is not what I ordered. In regards to contacting them, I am going to call them on Tuesday. Before I placed my order, they responded to emails within hours, now that I have the ring they are unresponsive....seems a little sketchy.

Anyway, I thank you all for your advice...I''ll try to post the pictures later this week.

Thanks again!!!
