I recently lost the diamond (setting and all) of my ring so I am researching a new stone...love this sight, although I could spend all day here and don''t have all day!
One thing I cannot find, is whether there is much of a difference in size 1.21 vs 1.38 carat?
I am trying to keep the depth between 60-65%, table 60-65% and the L/W ratio between 1.49-1.65.
My previous stone was beautiful...my hubbie did a wonderful job researching it. It was a 1.21 EC, so I am trying to keep it the same or better.
Are there any side by side pictures out there that would show the difference?
thanks for your help and opinions!

There is too many variation in ways of cutting for a comparison on the face up size of an emerald cut.

depending on how it is cut, a 1.38c might even look smaller than a 1.21c if the 1.21c is cut shallow.

Is this where depth comes in to play? Do I want less depth? I am confused over table vs face up vs dimensions.

ya, but not necessary a larger depth will make a smaller face up dimension. The faceting will also come into play. Just get the best cut, which will make the stone perform the best. A shallower, face up larger stone might be a dull stone.

I am just trying to get the best bang for the buck...just like everyone else I suppose. :)
I keep re-hashing and re-hashing all the variations over and over...gets overwhelming and I want to be done! Appreciate your help!

Good luck, if you need help looking for one just post your specs and budget here.

Welcome!

EC's are tricky and though you can use the numbers as a guide, images are essential in order to be able to judge them properly, ASET and photos in particular. There are many proportion configurations which can produce a great looking EC and also the angles and faceting all need to work well together which images help prove. Also as you may be aware, EC's can vary tremendously in shape and appearance so images are so important to help find the type you are looking for.

As for face up size this can vary, look at the diameters rather than weights to compare, also depth does not always relate to spread as with rounds with fancy shapes. Depth is important but sometimes these shapes can hold weight in other areas so it doesn't always relate to face up size. Your best bet is to contact an expert vendor such as Jon at www.goodoldgold.com tell him exactly what you are looking for and see what he can find for you.

Also if storm sees this it would be a great help to you as he has a vast knowledge of these shapes and really is the best prosumer to help you, he specializes with these diamonds and has written articles on them that you may be interested in.

Lastly if you see any EC's online that you like, we need detailed photos, anASET image and a Sarin report in order to give meaningful advice.

Hope this helps!

Thank you Lorelei! I appreciate the input...what''s funny, is that my husband did all this research before and now I am doing it...could just leave it to him again, but I wanted a little control. Now I am finding there is a HUGE amount of information out there. Thanks for taking the time to answer. Am going to read the links now. :)
