My stepdad got some opals years ago from his brother who lives in Australia. They landed in a drawer and were forgotten about. Last weekend we found them again and sweet as he is, he wanted my mom and me have them. There were two wonderful matching ovals and I left them for my mom, because I really want her to have a pair of earrings made with them… which she won’t but never give up hope… so I finally took this one - I love the colour! 5153B78C-AAEF-42ED-8B49-A6748342E643.jpegECCDB7D6-E80A-4079-85A8-EE4A746C6215.jpeg6086A5B0-C430-4F89-8203-8C471ACB8EBC.jpegBut what to do with it? I adore my stepdad and want to wear it in a piece of jewellery. And why is it’s back dark?

I'm no oval expert, but I agree: pretty color!! The black material probably implies it is an opal doublet (slice of opal mounted to a dark backing to enhance the color) or a triplet (slice of something clear to protect the opal surface, mounted to an opal slice, mounted to a backing). It will make a lovely piece of jewelry!

The black material could be potch—non-opal matrix stone that the opal grew on. Or it could be a doublet. It’s such a pretty stone, and so sweet of your stepdad.

Gypsy/rub over setting with the Opal set East-West, with round diamond/white Sapphire as side stones?

Pretty colour, thanks for sharing!

Thank you all! I‘ll sure do something with it and report back. DK… that sounds delicious!

How much would it cost to have the other 2 set for your mom for Christmas/ birthday ?

Ooo a N-S pendant with diamond mele!
