I know this is a tired argument but I still have a question.

So I keep hearing EGL diamonds are worse in color but that they can often times be as good in clarity, or only off by one grade. My own observations of VS2 diamonds seems to confirm this. They always appear to me to be eye clean. I've seen some good deals on EGL-D-VS2. Is there any reason not to get these.

The only reason I can think of is resale and perception.

The thing about EGL is that you just don't know what you're going to get - you might get what it's supposed to be, or you might get multiple grades of colour and clarity lower.

I guess if to your eyes, it is a VS2-D, then it might be worth it... But then why wasn't it sent to GIA in the first place? Don't forget that (GIA) SI1 and SI2 can be eye-clean, so just because it's eyeclean doesn't mean its VS2, and then is the price actually better? Most of the argument against EGL is that if it is a few grades lower that it's supposed to be, it's cheaper to have bought a GIA of those actual grades.

Yep, I've heard those arguments. In my research though it seems a VS2-D might be cheaper or conprable to an SI1-F; and when I look under a loop I think the EGL-VS2 is usually cleaner then a GIA SI1. I so see the varience in color however so I think if I wanted an F clarity I would shop for a D or an E minimum.

This is just from my observations, but it seems like since the concensus is always to buy a GIA or AGS stone if you are going for quality I don't want her friends to be judging out of hand about EGL when they don't know the stones that well.

I once bought an H color EGL that was graded an M by a GG appraiser! Sometimes they are off three total between color and clarity and sometimes a lot more. I would never ever buy another EGL diamond.

Yep, you can't assume that an EGL D is equal to GIA F. We have easily seen them be 3 and 4 color grades off. People can easily overpay for EGL stones because the stone may be even lower than they think.
