I understand that the consensus disregards EGL stones. I''ve read that the grading can be off my almost two grades. But, I''ve also read that EGL USA is the stricter one of the EGL''s. So, my question is, when stating that the color/clarity grade could be off my so much, is that also including EGL USA? I''m assuming the cut can''t be off as numbers are numbers, is that correct?

My experience with EGL USA has been good: I have an EC and OEC which both came out exactly as printed on the certs for the colour, clarity and measurements. The certs are 2005 onwards so I don''t know if that makes any difference. They both were sent for appraisal and Sarin scan.

As I am no expert, I''d like to hear others'' opinions too on the accuracy of their grading and measurements.

Read this survey http://grading.pricescope.com/ which might give you some of the info you want

numbers may be numbers, but numbers can be wrong.

I have an EGL USA EC that measures up exact to what the cert says. I have had a wonderful experience with EGL, but I suppose that there may be others that have had not so good.

Yes, numbers can be wrong...for EVERY institute, not just EGL USA.

I have no problem with EGL USA at all. Stones with these reports can be bought at a discount to GIA or AGS certified stones. If you're worried, have the stone independently appraised during the return period.

Thank you for the responses.

I already own an H SI2 1.58 EGL USA stone. I''m no expert, but I don''t see any color and it''s eye clean. I would be surprised if it was actually lower than either grading.

The reason I am asking though is because the jeweler has called back with a larger stone I might be interested in. My concern is that it is an I. If the grading is off by two, then I don''t think that I would be interested in it. I haven''t gone in to see the stone yet, I''m still deciding. However, my experience with the H has been good. I actually picked it over a GIA stone. The price was right and it "spoke to me", which is the most important part, right??

My e-ring has a 2.3 ct I SI1 OEC with an EGL USA cert and the appraisal came back as an I SI2, and the grader is known to be one of the best in town. I would have no qualms with buying an I color stone with an EGL USA cert, but I wouldn''t from one of the other EGLs.

Thanks for the encouragment, I appreciate it!

I called the jeweler back to get the numbers as I decided to at least look at it. I''m really excited now as the numbers look good to me.

1.74
I SI2
7.9 x 7.83
Depth 59
Table 58
Crown 14.1%
Pavilion 42.1%

Any comments??

A few watch outs.

1. if the girdle is thick then the crown and pavilion will be rather shallow.
2. It is more likely the girdle is very thin and the crown and pavilion angles will probably then be OK - but if it is going in a ring with exposed girdle it could chip.

Neither of these sound good. Is it going to be one or the other and how can you tell? I didn''t even think to ask about the girdle when I asked for the numbers.

Find an appraiser under the links at the top right in resources.
Ship the stone if there are none near you

EGL stones can be a great bargain as long as you know what you are paying for. A quick way to solve this problem is to have it appraised by a gemologist and see if the cert checks out. If it does, then you are paying less for the diamond. If it doesn''t...then you can return it.
