Years ago I bought 2 solitaire rings that are now diamond earrings. I have an EGL card for both .51 carats each and was curious about the measurements. What do these mean and are they good or bad? Both have a girdle inscribed #.

.51 carats each stone

5.02-4.99x3.20 mm G-H VS2

5.04-5.02x3.18 mm F-G VS2

Thank you in advance.

.51 carats each stone This means the weight. A carat is 0.2 grams.

5.02-4.99x3.20 mm A measurement around the girdle, at its widest and narrowest; this is roughly within acceptable tolerances for a round, but may be too deep for a more "ideal" cut.G-H G-H is regarding color. A range is typical of EGL and likely inaccurately high anyway.VS2 VS2 refers to clarity, or number, type, and severity of inclusions. With EGL this is likely rated higher here than it actually is.

5.04-5.02x3.18 mm F-G VS2

Thank you in advance.
Hope that helps. Stones can be graded/certified by whomever you wish. Some labs are more reputable than others. AGS and GIA are the best. There's a high likelihood that if you un-mounted them and sent to one of those two labs, those grades would be lower than what you have listed here. Not a huge deal and doesn't matter if you like them! :wavey:

HI:

Not sure what information you are seeking. What is "good or bad"?

Do you want to know if your stones dimensions are "appropriate" for their carat weight?

cheers--Sharon

I don't know much about measurements so I thought I'd ask here for those who know good measurements from bad measurements. I spent a lot of money for them and I guess curiosity got me today.

They were 2 solitaire rings with the EGL card that I made into earrings. I guess I was curious to know if they were good, bad (too shallow/too deep) or indifferent because I paid a lot for them.

Ah. I think part of the confusion is that your post is missing the critical data for trying to determining if a stone is well proportioned. For round brilliant stones like yours, we would need to know stuff like table size, crown angle, pavilion angle, crown height, pavilion height, girdle thickness, etc. Your EGL paperwork might not have those data. Even then, an Ideal-Scope or ASET is needed to get a better idea of how a stone might perform.

There are some great education links up top! There's a lot to learn and it's fun to do so. In short, though, with the limited measurements your paperwork gave, there isn't much of a way to tell how "good" they are.

Normally we'd consider a grading report as a good general idea (that's where your color and clarity marks come in), but unfortunately EGL isn't the most accurate or reputable lab. The kink with that is they often grade several grades higher in the color and clarity categories than more conservative labs. So an EGL "G" might be a GIA "I" or worse.

If you want to know how much they're worth, a gemologist appraiser is someone to see. Your stones would have to be removed from their settings and analyzed for color, clarity, and cut. (Weight too, but that's the easiest one to do.) It might be reasonable to send them off to AGS or GIA, but that can take a while. (GIA is backed up to close to two months for some people right now.)

However, most of that is moot if you already like them. An appraisal and proper grading report won't change the stones at all. It'll only change your perception of them. If they sparkle and you like them, that's what matters most. :wavey:

Thank you. :). This helps me and I do love them and that's all that matters.

They face up just a little small for their weight. I looked up some ideal cut stones just under .51 cts and these were the diameter measurements:

5.09x5.14

5.09x5.13

5.09x5.15

Thank you. This helps as well. I appreciate the information. :)

These measurements denote face up size or spread as we commonly refer to it here, this is important as carat weight does not necessarily mean face up size where you want it. Your earrings look lovely and they do face up slightly small as DS mentions but here we analyse these things to the tiniest degree, they do sparkle and appear to be lively diamonds which is the most important thing!

Good to know and thank you everyone for clarifying those measurements. I was young at the time so next time I'll be aware because what paid for them was a lot and I'm sure I got taken. They do sparkle and love them and I have been educated :)

Who hasn't been taken a time or two!?! We have all been there and you put it down to experience, they are very pretty stones which is by far the main thing, you could have a pair of completely rubbish non sparklers there, it could be worse! With the internet now such a useful aid to diamond shopping, it's so much easier to do your research and make an informed purchase which would have been extremely difficult a few short years ago. We live in exciting times!
