I have found almost my perfect diamond, eye clean, ideal cut and amazing fire. Only problem is it is an EGL diamond with a color rating of I. I am going to set it in platinum and I was curious if anyone had photos or previous experience with EGL colors and I just would really like to see some photos or a comparison of what an EGL I looks like versus a GIA I or anything of that nature. Thanks!

Do you know which EGL lab graded this diamond such as EGL USA, Israel, Europe etc please?

EGL USA

You will be fine with EGL USA, they are in-line with the GIA and AGS in terms of grading color. Go for it!

EGL USA
Thanks! EGL USA is said to be the strongest out of the EGL labs. The trouble is, that if you try to compare other lab graded diamonds for colour on a computer, photos can vary and monitor colours, so it is difficult as you are not comparing apples to apples so to speak...If this diamond is with a jeweller and you have seen it, then that is a good start, could you ask to see some GIA graded diamonds of I colour and similar size and shape to compare?

If you wish, post the proportions of this diamond ( depth, table, crown %, pavilion %, girdle thickness, diameter) so we can help you evaluate the cut, but it sounds promising and that you really like this diamond!

Depth: 61.5%
Table : 57%
Crown angle: 35.8
Pavilion angle: 40.3
Culet: None (0)
7.94 - 7.92 x 4.88 mm
Medium to slightly thick girdle

Please tell me that is good because I think I am ready to take the final step and let them have my money

It looks very promising, and is within fiery ideal cut range, so it could be a lovely stone. I forgot to ask for the carat weight please?

If you clearly understand that an I from one lab may be a grade away from another, you are all set to go. If you love the diamond, it won''t matter unless you get really attached to a letter of the alphabet. While the value and price vary with the grade, they also tend to be properly adjusted to the lab issuing the report, so it is not a major problem.

Yes that has been my biggest obstacle diamond shopping, not getting attached to the letter so much as what it looks like. As an engineer numbers and grades are a way of life, but you can get around them in this world and still come out with an amazing stone. :)

I dunno! I think it depends on the day...AND the stone. I have an oval EGL H stone. It''s looked warmer than an I colored oval stone I''ve seen (EGL) and it''s looked whiter than a GIA H colored stone. Since you are looking at rounds I can''t imagine the color will bother you unless you are very color sensitive. Sounds like a gorgeous stone!

I do understand. Also ask if you can take the diamond outside to view it away from the store lights, that way you can make sure you like it in more ' real life' conditions, then you can be sure that the I colour is fine for you.

HI:

I would buy a EGL stone on the contingent I could have it independently appraised. I have no issues with the clarity as much a the color--EGL tends to be more liberal on this variable.

cheers--Sharon

It sounds like you are going through a "mind clean" issue. The diamond you picked out has lovely proportions and if you can handle the color than you have a great stone! If you want to get a better idea of the color you could ask an appraiser or your jeweler to put it in a colorometer to get a better idea of whether it is an I or slightly lower.
