I''m considering purchasing a EGL certified diamond. After reading several threads concerning EGL vs. GIA, Im growing concerned. Is there a way for me to look up the EGL report by the cert #?

It''s a 2.00 Oval VS2 I color

I feel as though Im getting a great price at $9800.

Anyone''s thoughts and or comments are appreciated.

If you have the EGL cert number and it is from EGL USA, you can go to their website, plug in the cert number, and get the stats on the stone. They don''t link you to a picture of the cert, but they provide the information that''s on it.

I tried plugging in cert # on the EGL site but search found nothing. It is 10 digits and does not contain letters - does this mean that it is EGL Isreal? Should I stay away from a stone that is not EGL USA?

Of the EGL labs, EGL USA is the most reputable. They (EGL in general) can be off a grade when it comes to color (I think they''re pretty good on clarity), so would you be upset if the stone was potentially a J? Have you seen the stone in person? Does it speak to you? That is a very good price for a 2 ct oval....I''d make sure the cut parameters are alright and it''s not a poorly cut stone. You may be getting a great deal - but you want to make sure there''s not a glaring reason the stone is underpriced.

As far as EGL, EGL USA is not the original labratory (European Gemological Lab.) They are one of many Labratories around the world, and as far as certs. , they are all on the market and huge quantities of EGL certed diamonds are sold everywhere in the world.


My opinion about EGL USA is: Since they tried to stop most other EGL labs from using this name (with no success, so far), I asssume they are being un-fair in this legal fight, I would assume they are unfair in other area''s too!!!!

Only my personal humble opinion!!!!

I would not differentiate between any EGL Labs so quickly...

Correction - AGS graded diamonds are more expensive, and our grading survey (lower left on home page) confirmed they tend to be sticter than GIA.

EGL USA is owned now by a different group and my anecdotal and survey experiance strongly suggests EGL USA is far stricter then EGL in other countries - especiallly Israel, where I see a larger number of stones from.

I would not differentiate between any EGL Labs so quickly... I would and do when buying diamonds to sell to unsuspecting buyers. I have a diamond on consignment that makes 1 of a 2ct each pair for a client who wants a ''bluff'' pair of earrings. It is a grade over on color, and 2 over on clarity. EGL Israel. The Israeli owner was almost too embarressed to show it to me and apolgized profusely.

I refuse to trust any egl cert other than egl-usa and I use caution with them.
If the price is still good if the color is one grade down id consider egl-usa.
I would not trust any other egl nor igi nor anything else other than ags and gia with the possible exception of hrd.

I''ve seen the stone and it is beautiful. But I dont know anything about diamonds. I just want to make sure that Im not over paying.

I stand behind my post that EGL USA is superior over other EGL labs, but Garry H has already expounded upon the remark with his wealth of experience.

It''s not really enough information to tell. The science of cut grading is not as evolved for fancy cuts in comparison to rounds. I looked up your info on the Accredited Gem Appraisers "Do It Yourself" cut grading system...but you really need more info...girdle, crown angle, etc. One of your measurements is a 1A.....another is a 3A.

Here is the webshot for ovals from their website, you can see the ranges for cut parameters. Did the stone have an obvious bowtie? Fancy cuts are not all "by the papers." If you''ve seen the stone and it speaks to you....sometimes that''s more important than the papers. I just want to make sure you''ve seen the stone and it doesn''t have an obvious bowtie or fisheye or something.
