So after lots of reading, i''m not sure if what I''ve learned is enough. I''ve been focusing on the cut so far and a very important factor seems to be a well cut diamond that really sparkles. So i''ve been looking at the ACA from WF because I have read great things about them on PS. And when I look at the proportions of an ACA, they are all obviously inline with the requirements.

But I guess my issue is, when I see a diamond that is not ACA or not ideal from other vendors, and the proportions are outside the range of measurements, i''m not sure how that affects the diamond. I could probably safely say it affects the quality, sparkle, etc... But I''m not really sure how. And the next thing is, do I even need to know? Should I just say, stick with ACA or other H&A from other vendors and just know it is of quality and not worry about it?

For example, this diamond specs:
. Report: AGS
. Shape: A Cut Above H&A
. Carat: 1.020
. Depth %: 61.5
. Table %: 56
. Crown Angle: 34.6
. Crown %: 15.2
. Star : 53
. Pavilion Angle: 40.7
. Pavilion %: 42.9
. Lower Girdle %: 76
. Girdle: Thin to Medium Faceted
. Measurements: 6.46-6.47X3.98
. Light Performance: 0
. Polish: Ideal
. Symmetry: Ideal
. Culet: Pointed
. Fluorescence: Negligible

What if the depth % was 63 and the table % was 52? Am I being to detailed and looking to much into it?

If the depth were 63, it would mean that some of that carat weight you pay so dearly for at 1.02 carats would not be where it does the most good, ie. the lenth to width ratio. The lw is what you see when you look down at the diamond. More lw means larger looking diamond. How much of a dif would 63 vs. 60 or 61 depth make. I don''t know the math. It might be splitting hairs. I just prefer to keep that weight where it looks the best.

A table of 52 would probably make for a more fiery diamond.

A 63 TD with 52 T doesn''t mean it''s good or bad. It''s about the combo of the angles!

For advanced tutorial (more advanced than the PS advanced tutorial) this is quite thorough: http://www.diamond-cut.com.au/

Sticking to a vendors H&A selection would make it easier, if you are tired of numbers.

Can I just say that Its not necessary to go with the ACA''s to get a great diamond......or even the expert selections.....

I went with Whiteflash because of their reputation on here and started to search through the ''other'' dimaonds .....

I used the table and depth to narrow it down and then got WF to send me the GIA/AGS certificates..

The dimaond I eventually chose was rated at 2 star in WF.....but seemed to have excellent numbers...WF explained that it was a 2 star rating not becaus they didn''t think it was a good diamond, but simply because they did not have enough details to rate it any higher.....

I ended up getting this 2 star diamond..0.81 c G and eye clean.

GAI certificate and excellents in terms of CUT, polich and symmetry.

when I put the numbers through Holloway Cuat Advisor it come up as EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT for fire, scintillation, light return etc......

WF pulled the diamond into their lab and provided SARIN and IDEALSCOPE and looked at it for me.....they said it would have had a cut of AGS0 under the ags standards....

In the end, my 2 star diamond was less than $3,000,

not bad for a 0.81c G colour, eye clean, GIA excellent cut, excellent polish, excellent symmetry, EXcellent accross the board in HCA and would acheive the AGS0 standard.........

Plus the people at whiteflash really helped me narrow it down - each step of the way they would provide me with certificates, and provide their opinion on what was best from what I had selected....

Moral to the story....do your research, check things out and learn a little, I''m very pleased with my ''2 star'' find!!

the other moral to the story - use Whiteflash!

Thanks, i''ll take a look. But what do you mean by they didn''t have enough details to rate it higher? What details were missing?
