Effect of depth percentage on

Hi everyone - This is my first post, and I wish I would''ve found this site before my BF and I bought our diamond. It''s an EGL-USA, 1.28, F, Ideal, H&A, SI2 (inclusions not noticable to the naked eye). We understand the 4Cs and thought we were making an intelligent decision, but after being on this site, I realize that we really don''t know much at all. The jeweler showed us the cert and we made sure that it belonged to the diamond we were buying, but at the time I didn''t even know to look at the other specs. For some reason, however, I do remember that the table was 56% and the depth was 63.5%. (Sorry, right now I can''t tell you more because we don''t have a copy of the cert in hand; the setting is being custom-made and we don''t have the ring yet) I''ve read that EGL grading is a little more lenient, but let''s just assume that all of the other measurements are considered ideal, or at the very least very good, is my diamond going to look like a 1.28 because of the depth? We compared our diamond to others and thought it was beautiful; very white, lots of fire, etc., but we didn''t think (or know) to ask if we could compare it to another diamond of the same size. I feel like such a snob worrying about how BIG it''s going to look, but I can''t help it!!

First congrats on your ring, it sounds lovely! To find out how large your diamond faces up, we need the diameter measurements to be able to help, you will see these on the report as 7.0 x for example. It is a little deeper than we normally see around here, if you could post the measurements that would be useful. Before the deal is done, it would be good to get those measurements to make sure your diamond is facing up as large as it should do. Also it is perfectly valid that you want to make sure your diamond is facing up to the right measurements, if not, would it be problematic to change it for another one?

Yes, the diameter measurement is what will tell us if it appears smaller than it should. As Loreli said, a diamond at 1.25 should be at least 7.0 mm in diameter. Otherwise the stone will be facing up like a smaller weight diamond (if the diameter is less).

So can I assume that if all the other measurements fall within the ideal category, my 1.28 will be approximately 7.0, rather than say, 6.6?

1.28ct should have at least 7.0 mm.
6.95 mm may be acceptable depending on how the stone is cut.
But 6.9mm is NO.
6.6 mm is definitely NO.
A well cut 1.05 stone would have 6.6 mm.

OK........thanks everyone for your help. I''ll just wait and see what the cert says. we haven''t paid the full amount yet so if we''re not happy with the measurements, maybe we can have the jeweler look for another one, like Lorelei suggested.
