Hi, I was sent this pic of an inclusion and was told not sure if it was feather or pinpoint. I''m not concerned whether it''s feather or pinpoint since it''s really small but the pic really got me curious.

We always see pinpoint as a dot on the cert plot and feather as a wavy line (meaning there''s length to it). Needle as a straight short line (length again).

So when I saw the pic, I was thinking, how did he conclude it''s a pinpoint since there''s length. So I was thinking feather or needle. Then decided most prob feather since not the straight. When I looked at it the 2nd time, then it became funny to me cos if you look closely, you''ll literally see the pin head (bottom part) and pin body (the rest of it). I never knew a pinpoint really looks like a pin. So interesting. Just to share this with you all since I think many think pinpoint is a dot too, or at least I did.

And can anyone tell if it''s a pinpoint, feather or needle? I''m guessing pinpoint (cos it''d be really cool if it''s) or feather (waviness).

Sorry, apparently there''s another pic with same name. Here I rename it:

Sorry Ashleigh, its very difficult to offer an opinion from a partial photo, ask the vendor to explain would be your best bet. I take it this is the L VVS diamond? If VVS then most inclusions are highly unlikely to be an issue.

Hi Lorelei, thanks for your reply. This's not the L. I was helping a friend find a stone but she didn't like this one in the end.

I'm just curious cos I always though pinpoint means a dot, and this is so cool! Sometimes, we don't know how the name comes about till we see it. So thought to share and to learn at the same time. Just like I always wonder why people call the 2 sides of a coin head and tail given there's no head or tail printed anyway. Then I realised, after many years, in the past there's a head printed on one side of the coin. So the other side is automatically known as tail. Really interesting!

No problem! What was the clarity grade of this diamond out of interest?

It's a VS2.

If my friend gets a diamond from this vendor, I'll ask her to ask about this inclusion to satisfy my curiosity. But for now, hope someone can enlighten me.
