hi! I am thinking about upgrading my stud earrings. They are .34 each and set in 3 prong martinis, ideal cut from a great PS vendor with an upgrade policy. I wear them nearly every day - they are great!

If I upgrade, the new stones would hopefully be about .5 each. I will probably end up spending about $1200 plus shipping if I do the upgrade. I love my earrings but have always hoped to have bigger ones someday. I can afford the upgrade, but I only want to spend the money if I will really see a size difference.

What do you all think? Upgrade or be happy with what I have?

The estimated diameter of a 0.34c is 4.4mm while that of a 0.5 is 5.2mm. Should be noticeable, but worth it or not, it is for you to say.

I went from .33 to .50 each last year and I am really glad that I did. I think the size difference is worth it, especially if you wear them most every day.

I''m trying to decide whether to cannibalize the center OMC in my avatar and pair it with another 1 ct. OMC I have to make a set of studs. That would be going from .55 each to 1 carat each. Where does the madness end. LOL

Ditto To SC...

There will be a size difference, but IMO, unless .50 per stone is your ultimate goal, I would wait until you can afford to go a bit bigger, say .65+ so that you have a substantial difference. If you get the .50s and you''re disapointed with the small amount of difference, then you''ll have to upgrade again anyways.

I think it also depends on how the difference looks on your ear; you might want to go out to a jewelery store to compare the size difference to make a final call. I personally prefer to wear smaller earrings, 6mm akoya studs or .25 total weight studs, and overall just prefer the way they look on my ears to bigger studs.

hi tandogmom :)

i have .64ctw studs and also have a pair of diamonds which are .46 and .47. the difference between them is significant and noticeable, the .32 stones looking like ''side stones'' (if you kwim) and the larger stones looking like stones which can stand alone. i wear my .32 stones in my outer holes and wear a pair of 1.5ctw stones in my inner holes. (the .46 and .47 stones were ultimately set into a ring)

i think you''ll see a marked difference in size, but also a different ''feel'' to the studs - half a carat each really is a significant stone when seen on your ear.

i''d say go for it!

TDM, I did a similar upgrade a few years ago.

I went from .38s to .55, and the increased coverage on the lob was definitely noticeable (and worth it to me).

Stone cold, thank you for this helpful chart!

Bizou Mom, thanks for sharing your experience! I do wear them most every day. Glad to know that you are enjoying your upgrade!

Tradergirl, it is fun to think of the possibilities!

D&T, Thanks. That is what I am trying to figure out.

MC, I think you are right. I need to figure out if these are my end goal or if I want to go bigger yet. Somehow I can''t imagine going really huge because I like things pretty simple and modest - plus I really don''t want to have much more money than this tied up in earrings, I don''t think. As it is, I touch my ears constantly to make sure I haven''t lost my .34s! (They are insured - but still).

SZH07, that is a great idea. I really should go check some out in person. I did that when I was shopping for my .34s but it was a frustrating experience. The highlight was someone at a local store telling me that diamonds don''t come in 1/3 carat - they only come in .25, .5, .75, etc. Um, yeah right! Also, I don''t think this person could do decimals to fractions. But oh well, maybe I''ll give it another try.

Whitby, thank you for sharing your experience! I am glad you could see the difference - hopefully I can too.

AlJ, thanks for telling me about your upgrade! That encourages me!

I think I will go for it. I am in contact with the vendor and they are checking to see what they can find for me, yay!

You will notice the difference and I am sure you''ll enjoy them. I went from .25 to .36 and could see the difference. My dangles are .44 and they look bigger than the studs. I can''t wait to see what you get.

You will be able to notice the difference, but if you are ultimately planning to go larger in the future, I would wait until you can affod that upgrade as you may end up spending significantly more with two upgrades instead of one. For me .5 would be big enough for earring studs for every day wear.

You will definitely notice a nice size improvement, I have compared these sizes in person and upgraded .30's to .50's, notable and pleasing size improvement. TDM, use that chart as a guide only, one of the experts says it is a bit optimistic.

I would think it would be noticeable. Have you thought about changing the setting style also. The bezels seem to make then look larger also?
